16. The Marylebone Flyer-06.04.13

A trip out in my wife's Audi on a bright but chilly April morning to see the steam-hauled Marylebone Flyer charter passing on the Chiltern Mainline just south of Banbury. It was just warm enough on the way home to have the roof down on the car with me being grateful for the heated seats and a scarf wrapped around my neck!

168111, CH 09.20 Stratford-on-Avon-London Marylebone, King's Sutton SP486377
Catching some welcome Easter sunshine Chiltern's 168111 approaches King's Sutton working the 09.20 Stratford-on-Avon to Marylebone service. Looking at the rear of the train in shadow it is one of those times when the photographic god was on my side for a change!

220033, XC 06.25 Newcastle-Reading, King's Sutton SP486377
220033 passes just north of a chilly King's Sutton working the 06.25 Newcastle to Reading service. The Voyagers have been in service for just over ten years now with Cross Country being their second operator. A reminder of its years with Virgin is still to be seen just below the windscreen with the outline of their crest still clear to see on the yellow paint. Notice the milepost indicating eighty-four miles. This is the distance from Paddington via the GWR route through Oxford and Didcot rather than to Marylebone.

220025, XC 09.40 Reading-Newcastle, King's Sutton SP486377
CrossCountry's 09.40 Reading to Newcastle service passes just north of King's Sutton and will be preparing for its next stop at Banbury worked by 220025. In order to take this photograph, a short ladder is required to gain a little height above the railway boundary fence and the vegetation following a short and potentially muddy walk (but not today) along a farm track from the road.

168218, CH 09.09 London Marleybone-Stratford-on-Avon, King's Sutton SP486377
Unfortunately, some troublesome cloud has shrouded the sun but, having said that, by this time in the morning this view is becoming a little backlit so perhaps it is a blessing in disguise. 168218 passes just north of King's Sutton working the 09.09 Marylebone to Stratford-on-Avon Chiltern service. No doubt services such as this are conveying many tourists from London to Shakespeer's home town so a regular return direct service pattern is a positive thing but as for the units operating these trains, I am not so sure?

165106, GW 10.16 Oxford-Banbury, King's Sutton SP486377
Having just stopped at King's Sutton FGW's 165106 picks up speed working the 10.16 Oxford to Banbury all-stations service. This shuttle service is a strange anomaly being well away from the expected operating area for what is after all a TOC that operates trains west from London. Of course, historically, this location is deeply in GWR territory since the privatisation 'carve up' things have changed. Also, this is the only point that FGW operates any services, albeit for a very short distance, in Northamptonshire.

66537, 05.27 Leeds FLT-Southampton MCT (4O54), King's Sutton SP486377
66537 charges through the Northamptonshire countryside leading the 4O54 05.27 Leeds Freightliner terminal to Southampton Freightliner service. Notice that this member of the class appears to be suffering from the malaise that afflicts most of the class, namely corrosion staining emanating from around the windscreen apertures, however, in this example's case, the staining is not too extensive yet.

82303, CH 09.10 Kidderminster-London Marylebone, King's Sutton SP486377
DVT 82303 leads the 09.10 Kidderminster to Marylebone Chiltern service just north of King's Sutton. At eighty-four miles from London Paddington this location is just in Northamptonshire with the county boundary following the River Cherwell that flows parallel to the line just behind the trees to the left.

5043, outward leg of The Marylebone Flyer, 07.57 Birmingham Moor Street-London Marylebone (1Z44), King's Sutton SP486377
Looking very smart in some cold April sunshine Castle Class 4-6-0 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' storms southwards between Banbury and King's Sutton leading the 1Z44 07.57 Birmingham Moor Street to Marylebone charter. It led The Marylebone Flyer all the way to London with 47245 on the rear. This charter was a re-run of the original that was to have run on 13.10.12 but was cancelled due to a failed water carrier. I am glad that I decided to venture out in the morning to capture the outward charter as the return was piloted by 47245 due to a high lineside fire risk.

221141, XC 08.27 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournemouth, King's Sutton SP486377
Running at a slow line speed due to it following close behind the steam-hauled (5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe') The Marylebone Flyer charter CrossCountry's 221141 approaches King's Sutton with the 08.27 Manchester to Bournemouth service. A few miles south of this location at Aynho Junction, the charter would head southeast towards London leaving the Voyager to pick up speed again as it continues south towards Oxford.
