After a very showery day with me outside at work not appreciating the bursts of heavy rain (and hail and sleet at times) I was keen to capture the 5Q62 returning Class 458 from Widness to the Southern. Luckily, the sun played ball and some interesting photographs were captured

390114, VT 16.40 London Euston-Edinburgh Waverley (9S93, 1L), Victoria bridge
Under a dramatic sky looking south-east from Victoria bridge just south of the Northamptonshire village of Roade the 16.40 Euston to Edinburgh is seen worked by 390114 'City of Manchester'. Chances of capturing rainbows in railway images are few and far between so to manage a double rainbow is even rarer. The storm that had just passed saw a six-degree drop in temperature along with torrential rain, hail and some sleet, a classic British spring day!

350113, LN 16.26 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y52, 2L), Victoria bridge
With the storm that had passed this way some ten minutes previously passing towards the south-east 350113 leads another London Northwestern Desiro between Ashton and Roade working the 1Y52 16.26 Euston to Birmingham service. A wide-angle view at Victoria bridge has included the menacing clouds of the storm as well as a degrading rainbow.

66753, 13.57 Birch Coppice-London Gateway (4L68, RT), Victoria bridge
Looking uncharacteristically unkempt (for a GBRf locomotive that is) 66753 'EMD Roberts Road' leads the 4L68 13.57 Birch Coppice to London Gateway service. The dark and dramatic sky above the village of Roade contrasts well with the brightly lit foreground, a scene typical of a British April day!

325005, 16.16 Willesden PRDC-Warrington Royal Mail (1M96, RT), Victoria bridge
Less than a week ago I photographed the same train at the same location with the same unit leading. However, this time the weather is better with some evening sunshine lifting the lighting here at Victoria bridge in south Northamptonshire. 325005 leads the 16.16 Willesden PRDC (Park Royal Delivery Centre) to Warrington Royal Mail service.

66006, 11.15 Ditton Foundry-Dollands Moor (6026, 6E), Victoria bridge
Unbelievably, since its delivery to the UK in 1998 this appears to be my one and only photograph of 66006! When I get a spare hour or so I really must search through my archive and tick off those photographed on a complete list of the class. Still fully EWS liveried and branded 66006 leads the 11.15 Ditton Foundry to Dollands Moor service past Victoria bridge just south of the Northamptonshire village of Roade.

66420, 12.57 London Gateway-Garston (4M56, 46E), Victoria bridge
The 4M46 12.57 London Gateway to Garston Freightliner catches some late afternoon sunshine as it passes a chilly (for mid-April that is) Victoria bridge just south of Roade. As well as being extremely well loaded the 4M46 was also running early, something that it continued to do so to its Merseyside destination.

57303 & 458421, 13.11 Widness Transport Tech-Wembley Yard (5Q62, 11L), Victoria bridge
Former Virgin Thunderbird 57303 is now operated by, despite appearances, GBRf, and is now employed, among other things, undertaking drags. Having received attention (or conversion as it is being referred to!) at Alstom's Widness Technology Centre the locomotive tows South Western Railway's 458421 back to its third rail territory. The twenty-five million pound refurbishment of the 458s sees them reverting back to four-car sets and for use ostensibly on the London to Portsmouth route instead of the refurbished Class 442s; a plan that was quietly dropped that saw them unseremoniously scrapped. The two green barrier coaches are of interest being converted from former Class 508 EMUs. The leading one in this image is 64707 (formally from 508207) 'Laberzerin' now owned and operated by Arlington Fleet Services. I am not sure of the identity of the rear barrier unless anybody can identify it. After a layover in Wembley Yard, the 5Q62 then moved on and back to its Bournemouth base.
