My wife's birthday found me out making a trip to Waverley station as she had developed a nasty cold and wanted some rest in the hotel. I love Waverley station finding it a bustling and lively place with a much of interest. For the moment it remains 'open' so enthusiasts can wander about in the pursuit of their hobby.

158867, SR 14.33 Edinburgh Waverley-Dumblane, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
After the unseasonally cold weather, a bit of afternoon sunshine gladdens the heart! Standing in the gardens on The Mound just in front of the National Gallery of Scotland affords a commanding view of the western throat of Waverley station, a view spilt somewhat by the wiring infrastructure. 158867 leaves the station with the 14.33 service to Dumblane.

With the impressive and iconic North British Station Hotel dominating the skyline 158733 leaves Edinburgh Waverley station working the 14.35 service to Perth. In order to take this photograph I am standing on the area known as The Mound.

334028, SR 14.37 Edinburgh Waverley-Milngavie, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
ScotRail's 334028 negotiates the trackwork in the western throat of Edinburgh Waverley station as it departs with the 14.37 to Milngavie. A glance at the famous clock that rises above the North British Station Hotel (now the Balmoral Hotel) reveals that it is indeed running three minutes early as it has done since the hotel was opened in 1902. This was in an effort to ensure that passengers and hotel residents caught their trains from the station below. The clock runs like this all year except for Hogmanay night when it is set to the correct time!

91129, GR 15.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King's Cross, Edinburgh Waverley station
Catching some afternoon sunshine at Edinburgh Waverley station 91129 will work the 15.30 East Coast service to King's Cross. The East Coast livery does not look particularly impressive but as a subsidiary of the state-owned and run Directly Operated Railways its priority is probably not how the trains look but that they actually run offering a proper service to customers. East Coast have now been running services since the disastrous operations of NXEC on ceased on 13.0.11.09 with them not even managing two of their awarded seven years; private enterprise at its best!

334020, SR 16.07 Edinburgh Waverley-Milngavie, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
One of the refurbished Coradia Juniper units leaves Edinburgh Waverley working the 16.07 service to Milngavie. The train is just catching some afternoon sunshine with me standing next to the fence on The Mound with the former Waverley West signal box just seen to the extreme right.

158726, SR 15.47 Newcraighall-Glenrothes, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
The 15.47 Newcraighall to Glenrothes First Group's ScotRail service leaves Edinburgh Waverley station worked by 158726. Photography from The Mound, from where this image has been captured, is tricky now with the wiring spoiling the view but with careful timing an acceptable image is possible as is the case here.

170471, SR 16.18 Edinburgh Waverley-Cowdenbeath, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
First Group's 16.18 service to Cowdenbeath gets away from its starting point at Edinburgh Wavelery taken from The Mound to the west of the station. 170471 wears its smart First Group Saltaire livery that gives the TOC's trains a strong reasonable identity. However, this livery may well be changing in just under two years when First Group's franchise ends (in 2015).

170453, SR 12.53 Inverness-Edinburgh Waverley & 170420, unidentified working into Edinburgh Waverley, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
A wider angle photograph of the western throat of Edinburgh Waverley station not only shows the station but also the impressive former North British Station Hotel and to the left the Scott Monument (as in Sir Walter Scott). Down below 170453 winds into the station at the end of its journey as the 12.53 from Inverness. To its right 170420 leaves working an unidentified working.

170424, SR 16.29 Edinburgh Waverley-Inverurie Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
Worked by Turbo unit 170424 works the 16.29 Edinburgh to Inverurie ScotRail service out of what will now be becoming an increasingly busy Waverley station. What with the huge number of tourists that visit the magnificent city of Edinburgh and the peak time workers arriving (In the morning) and leaving at this time to get home Waverley station is extremely busy as well as being a crossing point from one side of the city to the other.

170420, SR 16.33 Edinburgh Waverley-Perth, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
170420 rattles away from Edinburgh Waverley station working the 16.33 service to Perth. To take this photograph I am a little packed in between some fencing and a hedge standing on a dwarf wall training the camera over the railings utilising the fold-out screen.

170475, SR 16.36 Edinburgh Waverley-Dunblane, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
Wearing its now defunct Strathclyde Partnership for Transport livery 170475 leaves Edinburgh Waverley working the 16.36 service to Dunblane. It will not be long before this livery will be replaced with the First Group Saltaire scheme.

170474, SR 16.17 Newcraighall-Glenrothes, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
170474 leaves Edinburgh Waverley station working the 16.17 Newcraighall to Glenrothes ScotRail service. The Class 170s are the backbone of many ScotRail services with them proving to be reliable and dependable sets. This example still wears its Strathclyde Partnership for Transport livery but will soon be in the workshop to reemerge in the First ScotRail Saltaire scheme.

158870, SR 17.03 Edinburgh Waverley-Dunblane, Edinburgh Waverley station from The Mound
Taken from The Mound just west of Edinburgh Waverley station 158870 departs working the 17.03 service to Dunblane with another unit on the rear. The unit will have been strengthened in an effort to combat overcrowding in and out of Edinburgh at peak times, something that ScotRail is struggling to deal with at the present time.

67007, SR 17.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Edinburgh Waverley (2G13), leaving Edinburgh Waverley from The Mound Station
As per yesterday afternoon, see....https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30051098286/x67007-16-08-edinburgh-waverley-edinburgh 67007 leaves Edinburgh Waverley station leading the Fife Circle evening commuter service. The 2G13 is an all-station stopper service that leaves at 17.08 and is composed of a rake of Mk.IID air-conditioned stock that should be a step up for passengers more usually used to a meagre unit!
