Once again the EFL or Carabao Cup is held at Wembley and usually attracts a footex if a team from the north is in the final. Last season it was Newcastle's turn but this year it was Liverpool's who were to play Chelsea. The added bonus was that there were two charters bringing fans from Merseyside but things did not go quite to plane for one train.

86101, 09.38 Liverpool Lime Street-Wembley Central (1Z90, 11E), Victoria bridge
The first of two up footex charters heading to Wembley from Liverpool passes Victoria bridge just south of Roade. 86101 'Sir William A Stanier FRS' leads the 1Z90 09.38 Liverpool South Parkway to Wembley Central operated by LSL (Crewe). The sight of an InterCity liveried Class 86 on the WCML evokes memories of days past when trains such as this would probably have not attracted my attention in the same way that Pendolinos do today!

47712, 09.38 Liverpool Lime Street-Wembley Central (1Z90, 11E), Victoria bridge
The last time that I saw 47712 'Lady Dina Spencer' was less than a month ago, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30050159829/x47712-east-anglian-push-pull-07. Here it is dead in tow at the rear of the 1Z90 Liverpool Lime Street to Wembley Central footex passing Victoria bridge just south of Roade. It was conveying Liverpool supporters to Wembley for the 2023/24 EFL Cup match with Chelsea. They were to return home later in the evening happy after winning 1-0 in the last minute of extra time with the winning goal coming from captain Virgil van Dijk.

86259, 09.24 Liverpool South Parkway-Wembley Central (1Z86, 62L), Victoria bridge
The second football charter operated by WCR should have passed this spot just five minutes after the first one operated by LSL. Unfortunately, something went badly wrong before the train left Merseyside with it being diverted away from its usual route via Runcorn to take the Chat Moss line via Newton-Le-Willows to Winwick Junction from where it lost more and more time. Passing Victoria bridge over an hour adrift the now repaired 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' leads the 09.44 Liverpool South Parkway to Wembley Central running, appropriately, as 1Z86. In an effort to make up some time, signallers have pathed it on the fast line via Weedon rather than taking it through Northampton. Despite the late running, Liverpool supporters will have arrived in time for the start of the match at Wembley but might well have missed out on some pre-match entertainment.

86401, 09.24 Liverpool South Parkway-Wembley Central (1Z86, 62L), Victoria bridge
Still wearing its Caledonian Sleeper livery and branding 86401 'Mons Meg' brings up the rear of the 1Z86 09.24 Liverpool South Parkway to Wembley Central footex. Running over an hour late due to issues before the train had even left Merseyside it has made up some time being one hundred minutes late on arrival at Rugby. Signallers eventually found a slot on the up fast line thus avoiding the Northampton loop but this did come at the expense of holding up a number of Pendolinos. The train is seen passing Victoria bridge near Roade with 86259 ' Les Ross/Peter Pan' leading. The Liverpool supporters will all have been able to make the match and would have returned happily after their team beat Chelsea 1-0 in the one hundred and eighteenth minute of extra time.
