With the EFL Carabao Cup taking place at Wembley a footex charter had been organised to get Newcastle supporters to the match. By the time it reached my home area near Roade it was running late due to a worrying pause at Hilmorton Junction with a southbound Pendolino being diverted around it via Northampton. Incidentally, the fans on board would later be disappointed with Eddie Howe's team beaten 2-0 by an in-form Manchester United.

67024 & 67005, 08.43 Newcastle Central-Wembley Central (1Z43, 6L), Milton crossing
In superb winter lighting 67024 leads the late running 1Z43 footex past Milton Crossing just north of Roade. 67005 'Queen's Messenger' is on the rear of the matching set of BR blue stock with the exception of a Mk.I buffet car. The train left Newcastle at 08.43 and was taking hopeful Newcastle supporters to Wembley to cheer on their team who were competing in the EFL Cup against Manchester United. Unfortunately, their journey home would have been a little muted as Newcastle were defeated 2-0.

When the subject is interesting and the weather this good I will take a 'going-away' shot quite happily! 67005 'Queen's Messenger' brings up the rear of the 08.43 Newcastle Central to Wembley Central footex as it passes Milton Crossing between Roade and Blisworth. The train was running just under half an hour late by this point following an unexplained pause a short distance north at Hillmorton Junction. A fellow enthusiast on the bridge here indicated that the driver had stopped the train due to a brake dragging issue following its reversal at Nuneaton. The football fans on board did not miss the start of their Carabao Cup final at Wembley but the result did not go their way - Newcastle losing 2-0 to Manchester United.

66154, 11.07 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 32L), Victoria bridge
I popped my camera over my shoulder for my Sunday afternoon walk. On arrival at one of my favourite local haunts, Victoria bridge just south of Roade, the 6M45 bottled water train was due. After a short wait, it passed with an EWS liveried 66154 complete with its 'Three Beasties' branding still in place. The sun was just a little too low in the afternoon sky to fully illuminate the train but the general lighting is magnificent!
