An early morning trip to Milton Keynes to capture The Cumbrian Mountain Express. I met with Andy for this and we were greeted by one of WCR's Class 47s leading the train rather than the normal Class 86 as this was undergoing repairs following a failure on its last run.

390049, VT 05.05 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A04, 11L), Motlton Keynes Central station
The first up service to London of the day from Manchester arrives at Milton Keynes station in the half-light of a grey and damp February morning. 390049 is working the 1A04 05.05 Piccadilly to Euston service. Technically, this is a tricky photograph with a fair amount of digital noise that the excellent Photoshop plug-in software Neat Image has taken care of.

The 05.42 Wolverhampton to London Euston pauses at Milton Keynes station worked by 390010. Whilst not a cold start to the day it was very grey and damp with it seemingly taking an age to get light on this particular February morning, that all made a slap-up breakfast with Andy all the more appealing after we had finished our railway business!

With 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' out of action following failure working the previous Cumbrian Mountain Express on 27.01.24 West Coast Railways has been forced to substitute a diesel in the form of 47815 'Great Western' for today's charter. In addition, due to the refusal of the regulator to allow WCR to use their own Mk. 1 stock without the fitting of CDL (central door locking), they have had to hire in compliant stock that has been hastily re-branded with WCR vinyls. Still running as 1Z86 (in a nod to its usual haulage) the charter is seen arriving at Milton Keynes station on a very dull February morning.

Nameplate, 47815, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 06.35 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86, 4E), Milton Keynes station
It is nice to see the tradition of locomotives carrying 'proper' nameplates rather than vinyls as is all too common today! 47815 'Great Western' pauses at Milton Keynes station leading the outward leg of the Cumbrian Mountain Express charter. Unlike the first CME of the year back at the end of January, this one ran bang to time with no problems encountered. I heard it returning in the late evening running to time passing my home in Roade with the Class 47 working well!
