Returning to work after the extended Christmas and New Year break coincided with two interesting workings passing very close to where I was working in Milton Keynes both within fifteen minutes of each other. As the sun was out, which made a change from the wet and stormy weather that we had been experiencing, I popped to the lineside during my lunch break.

390121, VT 12.13 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H19, 9L), Loughton Redway bridge, Milton Keynes
Catching some extremely welcome winter sunshine as it passes Milton Keynes, 390121 'Opportunity' is seen working the 12.13 Euston to Manchester service. I am standing on one of Milton Keynes' Redway bridges where pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders are kept separated from cars. This bridge is immediately north of Milton Keynes station in the district of Loughton.

66506 & 66554, 10.00 Crewe BasfordHall-Southampton MCT (4O35, 2L), Loughton Redway bridge, Milton Keynes
Unfortunately, the locomotives of an unexpected double-headed 10.00 Crewe Basford Hall to Southampton Freightliner service did not quite fit between the electrification masts just north of Milton Keynes station. This train is normally headed by a Class 70 but today 66506 'Crewe Regeneration' and 66554 look good in some extremely welcome winter sunshine.

60046 & 56091, 11.30 Willesden DC Rail Sidings-Leicester LIP (0Z56, 6E), Loughton Redway bridge, Milton Keynes
With the skyline of Milton Keynes looking reassuringly familiar 60046 'William Wilberforce' leads 56091 'Driver Wayne Gaskell' as the 0Z56 11.30 Willesden to Leicester LIP light engine move. With the future of the remaining Class 60s looking pretty bleak now with DB standing their examples down DCR remains the only operator having four in service.

43468 & 43465, 10.24 Kidderminster SVR-Wembley Yard (6Z43, 16E), Loughton Redway bridge, Milton Keynes
Superpower for a barrier train! 43468 and 43465 lead the 10.24 Kidderminster SVR to Wembley Yard barrier train running as 6Z43 through Milton Keynes just north of the station. The train was being positioned for a future new stock move of some kind, possibly of a new Merseyrail Class 777 unit. I cannot quite get used to the new look of the HST power cars devoid of their yellow hi-viz front panel. With new lighting fitted at the front, they are exempt from having the yellow panel.
