A foggy and cold Sunday morning with mainline diversions encouraged me out locally on my bike to Roade cutting. Whilst I was there, the fog started to lift and the sun came through completely changing the atmosphere.

390104, VT 08.15 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston, Roade cutting
390104 'Alstom Pendolino' emerges from the fog as it passes through Roade cutting. It is on the up slow line having avoided the Weedon route instead coming via Northampton. It is working the 08.15 Liverpool to Euston Sunday service that will have been suitably re-timed to take account of extra time due to the diversion.

An unidentified Class 390 heads north on the down slow line through Roade cutting. With the sun just managing to add some backlighting to the scene this photograph of the 09.45 Euston to Liverpool Sunday service has some interesting lighting qualities.

Class 390, VT 09.45 London Euston-Glasgow Central, Roade cutting
Having been in service on the WCML for just over ten years now the Class 390 Pendolinos have proved to be dependable whisking passengers up and down the length of the line. An unidentified member of the class passes through Roade working the 09.45 Euston to Glasgow Central. The train is on the down slow line taking a Sunday diversion through Northampton rather than via the Weedon 'old route'.

Despite all the tech available to me I have been unable to identify this Virgin West Coast service passing through a misty Roade cutting. Not only do I not know where the train is heading but I don't know its number either! Never mind, just enjoy the strongly back-image and that it is on the down slow line due to engineering works and is thus travelling via Northampton.

390122, 08.42 Oxley-London Euston ECS (5A16), Roade cutting
With the fog now having lifted and strong welcome winter sun coming through 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' heads through Roade cutting on the up slow line working Virgin's 08.43 Oxley to Euston Sunday only ECS move. This is a regular Sunday move that up until last year was a locomotive hauled 'drag' by a Class 57. 390122 was the first Pendolino to rack up one million miles in service back in 2008 an event that took place close to here just south of Bletchley.

390122, 08.42 Oxley-London Euston ECS (5A16) & Class 390, 10.15 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street, Roade cutting
A passing of Pendolinos in Roade cutting sees 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' head south on the 10.15 Oxley to Euston ECS whilst another member of the class heads north with the 10.15 Euston to Liverpool service. Both locomotives are on the slow lines due to engineering works closing the Weedon route meaning a slow diversion via Northampton.

350250, LM 11.08 Northampton-London Euston, Roade cutting
After dense fog just an hour or so earlier the sun has burnt through revealing some sparkling winter sunshine. London Midland's 350250 heads south through Roade cutting taken from the curiously named Muddy bridge working the 11.08 Northampton to Euston service.

Class 390, VT 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston, Roade cutting
Another example of a Pendolino working with its front drawbar cover wide open which seems to be a regular occurrence at the moment. As well as doing nothing for aerodynamics it will also mean any poor creatures that are hit by the train will get drawn into the area that is full of much-complicated equipment. I for one would not fancy the job of pulling the remains out at a depot in the evening! The unidentified Class 390 heads south through Roade cutting working the 09.20 Manchester to Euston service that has been routed via Northampton rather than via the mainline due to engineering work.
