Having had my operation, plastered up and on crutches did not prevent me from getting out on this snowy day; what an incongruous sight it must have been! An interesting lash-up of locomotives was the attraction and, no, I did not tell Mrs. Ontheupfast what I had done with her thinking that I was at home watching daytime TV resting with my leg elevated!

86501, 05.03 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L97), Roade
Following some snowfall the previous night 86501 hauls the 4L97 05.03 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner past Roade. This particular member of the class was a bit of a testbed in terms of freight work conversion with the number actually carried by two 86s. In this final form, it has also been prone to fire with two events causing significant damage to it with the latest in 2009 near here at Bletchley.

Taking photographs whilst on crutches in a field and in the snow was quite a challenge! Not the finest photograph of a Pendolino but given the circumstances mentioned then it will have to do! 390121 approaches Roade working the 10.00 Euston to Manchester service.

350119, LM 09.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, Roade
The Desiros have been operating on the Birmingham to London route for London Midland since the summer of 2007 following the demise of Silverlink. They have proved to be reliable and dependable if a little dull! 350119 passes Roade with the 09.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston service on a snowy January morning.

DR73113, unidentified down working, Roade
Network Rail Tamper DR73113 heads north near Roade. I do not know where the move originated or where it was heading for but it makes a change to see something a little different on this section of line.

47245, 87002, 86101 & 33029, Carlisle-Southall LEs, Roade
An interesting lash-up of locomotives pass just south of Roade in the form of 47245, 87002 'Royal Sovereign', 86101 'Sir William A Stanier FRS' and 33029 'Glen Loy'. The train had run down from Carlisle heading for Willesden for exam. purposes retrurning the same day in order to stable the two AC electrics back at Carlise as part of this winter's Ice Maiden standby duties for Network Rail.

33029, 86101 & 87002, Carlisle-Southall LEs, Roade
A bit of a going-away 'grab shot' shows 33029 'Glen Loy', 86101 'Sir William A Stanier FRS' and 87002 'Royal Sovereign' heading south past Roade with 47245 leading the ensemble just disappearing out of sight at the front. The unusual group of locomotives were heading to Willesden from Carlisle for some sort of exam. They would return later in the day. for the electrics to continue their winter stint at Preston stabled and ready for ice-breaking duties. It is unusual to see West Coast send out their Class 33 particularly this far south from their depot at Carnforth.

Probably pretty empty by this time in the day after running south to London packed with commuters earlier in the morning, London Midland's 350113 passes Roade working the 09.46 Euston to Crewe service. Having been standing in a snowy field on crutches for some time now it felt like I ought to be heading for home a relatively short trek across the filed behind me.

A pan image of 350128 as it passes Roade heading south working the 09.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. The Class 350 Desiros may be a little dull and monotonous on this route but at least they are reliable and do the job that is asked of them day after day for their operator London Midland.

The final of my trio of pan photographs taken in the snow at Roade sees 390020 speeding northwards working the 10.07 London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street service. It really is time for me to head carefully home now on my crutches and have a rest and my wife will never know that I have been out; unless she reads this webpage that is!
