My record-keeping has gone somewhat awry at this time with me having no record of the date that I headed to Cheltenham by train for my teacher training interview at The College of St. Paul's and St Mary's. I travelled from Bradford-on-Avon to Cheltenham via Bristol and Gloucester.

Station car park, Bradford-on-Avon
A man walks his dog through Bradfrod-on-Avon's station car park perhaps heading back towards his white Austin Maxi? Bradford's station can be seen in the background with its footbridge and the short tunnel. The car park occupies the site of the former goods yard and goods depot that was located where the line of cars is seen right in front of the camera.

Class 33, unidentified Cardiff Central-Portsmouth Harbour working, Bradford-on-Avon station
An unidentified Class 33 approaches Bradford-on-Avon station working a Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service made up of a mixture of Mk. I and Mk. II stock The locomotive is displaying the correct 89 headcode for this service. In lighting such as this Ilford FP4 film was able to reproduce an exceptionally wide tonal range and also scans very well today using modern equipment as demonstrated in this image.

47251, up oil tankers, Bradford-on-Avon station
Up until 1990 47251 was a locally based member of the class moving regularly between Cardiff Canton and Bristol Bath Road depots meaning that I will have spotted it often while living near to Bradford-on-Avon. It is seen, unfortunately suffering from a little motion blur, leading an oil tanker train through Bradford-on-Avon in some lovely early winter light. Happily, 47251 is still with us as one of DRS' Thunderbirds now numbered 57302 'Chad Varah'. Previous to this it was one of Virgin's machines named 'Virgil Tracy'.

46011, unidentified down working, Gloucester station
I had travelled behind 46011 from Bristol Temple Meads to here, at Gloucester. It is the process of being detached from its unidentified down working whilst a replacement locomotive has moved off from Horton Road depot and will be being attached to what will be the front of the train when it gets away to head northwards towards Birmingham. I rejoined the train to travel the short distance to Cheltenham for my interview at the College of St. Pul and St. Mary. Notice the Royal Mail trolleys on the platform, a useful piece of railway infrastructure widely used by us spotters back dring this era!

W1007, Gloucester station
Taken from my train as it waits to leave Gloucester station a former GWR Siphon 'G' ventilated milk van (NMV) is seen on the adjacent platform. W1007 dates from 1955 and was Swindon built being converted for newspaper use with fluorescent lighting installed becoming an NNV. This particular example was to survive a further three years in service being condemned in 1984.
