A quick dash out before work on the trusty Brompton to see another 4G97 wagon move from Crewe to Wolverton works. The train coincided with a stunning September morning.

221115 & 221103, VT 05.35 Blackpool North-London Euston (1R14, RT), site of Roade station
AWC's 221115 and 221103 pass through Roade in lovely autumnal lighting working the 05.35 Blackpool to Euston service. The 1R14 is diagrammed as a twin Voyager service that I suspect is some sort of positioning run given that all the other services to and from Blackpool are operated by Pendolinos.

66420, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, 3E), site of Roade station
I expect the the driver of 66420 would be blinking as his train emerges from the darkness of Roade cutting into the bright and low September morning sunshine. The Freightliner 66 is leading the 4L52 03.39 Garston to London Gateway service past the site of Roade's former station the entrance road to which can still be seen to the right of the photograph.

66416, 05.26 Crewe Basford Hall-Wolverton Centre Sidings (4G97, RT), site of Roade station
Another movement of redundant HHA coal hoppers passes through Roade led by Freightliner's 66416. Since the decline of coal movements, hundreds of the newer HHA and their older HTA versions are sitting idle in various sidings throughout the country. Like these examples, many are heavily graffitied and crying out for some sort of re-use. The 4G97 has brought a small number down from Crewe Basford Hall to Wolverton Works however I am unsure as to why these ones have moved south. There was a report of a Class 197 heading to Chester a couple of days after this one and that pairs of HHAs were used as barriers. Others are converted for aggregate use which involves them being cut in half and shortened to reduce their capacity as aggregates weigh more than coal meaning that they would not exceed their design axle weight.
