Following yesterday's late afternoon trip to Littlehampton I decided on a slightly shorter run to Lancing on this afternoon. I had spotted a signal box from the train the previous day and was eager to get a photograph of it. It was another extremely hot afternoon with a September temperature in excess of thirty degrees celsius.

387215, GX 15.39 Brighton-London Victoria (1M87, RT), Brighton station
The Gatwick Express livery applied to their fleet of nineteen Electrostars is certainly pretty conspicuous! 387215 waits inside Brighton's grand trainshed to leave with the 15.39 service to Victoria. Despite driver-only operation issues prior to their introduction, these units have proved dependable on this route since their delayed introduction in 2016.

My train to Lancing waits at Brighton. I travelled aboard 377162 working the 16.00 to Portsmouth and Southsea. Another hot day with temperatures in excess of thirty degrees Celsius found me appreciating the efficient air conditioning in these units that consistently seemed to work on every unit I travelled on!

Lancing signal box (BR, 1963)
Like Littlehampton, that I visited yesterday, Lancing box seen here should be closed by now with full control moving the Three Bridges regional operation centre. However, both are still operational, in the case of the former still controlling semaphores! I am not quite sure what role Lancing box still plays but it did have a Westinghouse M5 entrance-exit signalling panel commissioned and installed in 1988. The box was built in 1963 replacing a mechanical box on the opposite of the line. The roof is not original as it was blown off during the 'Great Storm' of 1987.

377411 has stopped just stopped at Lancing station working the 15.29 Portsmouth Harbour to Brighton service. Unfortunately, looking into the hot afternoon sun thus making the lighting tricky has not made for the finest photograph.

377213, SN 15.16 London Victoria-Littlehampton (1H38, 2L), Lancing level crossing
The 15.16 London Victoria to Littlehampton 'fast' service passes Lancing station at line speed worked by 377213. It is passing the sixty-year-old signal box located adjacent to the town's busy level crossing. Notice that the box still wears its somewhat faded but recognisable Network South East sign.

377468, SN 16.13 Littlehampton-London Victoria (1H47, 1E), Lancing level crossing
A wide-angled view taken from the pedestrian footbridge to the east of Lancing station reveals the busy level crossing with South Street. Centre in the image is the 1963 British Railways built signal box that is still in use but to what degree I am unsure; local knowledge, please? 377468 has just sped through the station a short distance into its journey, the 1H47 Littlehampton to Victoria Southern service.

377421, SN 15.28 Southampton-Brighton (1N27, 6L), Lancing station
The return train of my short late afternoon visit to Lancing has just come to a halt at Lancing station. I travelled aboard the ex 15.28 Southampton Central back to Brighton worked by Southern's 377421. Sitting waiting for this train on Lancing station in the glorious hot sunshine (another day with a recorded temperature in excess of thirty degrees Celsius) felt more akin to June than September!

Tickets, Brighton-Lancing-Brighton
An off-peak day return to lancing cost me a grand total of £5.80. Eager to support their use and with less of a queue than yesterday I bought from the ticket office rather than from the machines on the concourse.
