Gillingham signal box (BR, 1957)
The British Railways built signal box at Gillingham is a bit austere but is very much of its time. It replaced a lovely LS&W structure in 1957 when the route was modernised. It contained, when this photograph was taken in 1981, a thirty-lever Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co 'A3' frame as did many of the boxes on the route between Salisbury and Exeter.

Former SR sack barrow, Gillingham station
The heritage of this sack barrow stored under Gillingham's (Dorset) footbridge is of questionable history. While being at Gillingham it firmly places it in L&SW/Southern territory the fact that one of the sign writing indicates Yeovil Town suggests that it may be of GWR heritage. However, to throw further doubt the other writing on the barrow says Yeovil Junction so it is back to the Southern. Either way, it was interesting to find this item and I wonder where it ended up? Yeovil Town station was one of three stations in the Somerset town that once existed and was closed in 1964, two still remain, Pen Mill and Junction.

Former SR enamel, Gillingham station
A further piece of interesting infrastructure on Gillingham station. The small enamel attached to the seat back indicates the station's name but notice the length of the previous notice that would have originally have said Gillingham - Dorset to avoid arriving passengers being confused with the town of the same name in Kent.

50011, 11.10 London Waterloo-Exeter St. David's (1V11), Gillingham station
The train service on the former L&SW route between Salisbury and Exeter on Sundays was pretty poor back in the 1980s with the large sections of the route undergoing singling. One of the few timetabled Sunday trains is seen standing at Gillingham station destroying the peace and quiet of a small Dorset town n a summer's afternoon! 50011 'Centurian' is seen next to the 1957 signal box leading the 1V11 11.10 London Waterloo to Exeter St. David's.
