After a busy day's shopping, my wife had to go back to the hotel and lay down! I took the opportunity to go to the station for an hour or so. Now I knew from my previous visit to Chester station that it is not very 'enthusiast friendly' with spotters and photographers having to seek permission from the station supervisor who then has to issue some sort of permit. To get around this ridiculous situation I simply bought a modern-day platform ticket, a return ticket to Bache that I did not use for travel but merely permitting me to pass in and out through the barrier. Something that I did not spot until I came to 'process' the images is that all those photographed on this summer's afternoon was that they all were due for imminent replacement with the railway face of Chester about to look very different.

197102, 16.10 Chester-Llandudno Junction (3D07, 3E), Chester station
The face of things to come at Chester! 197102 waits at Chester station to leave with the 3D07 16.10 staff training working to Llandudno Junction. The train's interior was covered in plastic and cardboard with just a pair of tables in use at either end just behind the leading and trailing cabs. Here staff were ensconcing themselves taking their turn to walk through the bulkhead door and rive the unit. These units will transform the railways throughout the northwest replacing many classes of other units currently in use with both Northern and Transport for Wales.

507010, ME 14.45 Chester-Chester (2C35, 1L), Chetser station
 Up for imminent replacement.

Passing under Hoole bridge 507010 arrives at Chester with the 2C35 14.45 circular service via Liverpool Central. Dating from the late 1970s the 507s are the oldest trains still in regular use on the network (except for some of the Scottish and GWR HST carriages and power cars) and are up for imminent replacement by the Class 777s that are currently being delivered and undergoing testing; behind schedule of course!

158823, AW 14.34 Holyhead-Cardiff Central (1V97, 1L), Chester station
 Up for imminent replacement.

158823 waits at Chester station working the 14.34 Holyhead to Cardiff Central TfW service. Along with a number of units the Class 158 Super Sprinters are to be replaced next year by the Class 197 units currently undergoing testing, staff training and mileage accumulation runs.

221110, VT 14.50 Holyhead-London Euston (1A53, 2L), Chester station
 Up for imminent replacement.

221110 arrives at Chester working Avanti's 14.50 Holyhead to Euston service. 2022 should be the final full year of operation for these awful units that date from 2002 (now twenty years ago!) with their replacement by bi-mode Class 805 Hitachi units similar to others now in use on the ECML and WCML.

153303, NT 16.30 Chester-Liverpool Lime Street (1B00, RT) & 150134, NT 17.02 Chester-Manchester Piccadilly (2H33, RT), Chester station
 Up for imminent replacement.

Both 153303 and 150134 should be replaced by new units in the coming couple of years but invertible delays have pushed this back a little. To the left 153303 will soon leave with the 16.30 service to Liverpool Lime Street via Helsby and the Halton curve (Runcorn). These trains offer an alternative route to Liverpool rather than going via the Wirral with Merseyrail. They also offer passengers from Chesire a direct route to Liverpool's John Lennon Airport. To the right, 150134 will work the 2H33 service to Manchester Piccadilly via Norwich and Knutsford.

175003, AW 12.17 Maesteg-Holyhead (1W94, RT), Chester station
 Up for imminent replacement.

175003 was refurbished a relatively short while ago when the smart TfW livery was applied. However, it is still going to be replaced within the next year by the Class 197s that are currently undergoing testing on the North Wales coast route. With an uncertain future ahead of it the unit that is now over twenty years old is seen leaving Chester with the 1W94 12.17 Maesteg to Holyhead service.

507013, ME 16.45 Chester-Chester (2C43, 4L), Chester station
 Up for imminent replacement.

The 16.45 Chester to Chester circular Merseyrail service (via Liverpool Central) waits to leave its starting point in some pleasant and welcome afternoon sunshine. The Class 777 units that are to replace the venerable Class 507s are currently being delivered but testing, staff training and mileage accumulation seems to be taking far too long with them due to be in service by now.

175004, AW 15.44 Llandudno-Manchester Airport (1H91, 1L), Chetser station
 Up for imminent replacement.

With more railway staff in view than passengers 175004 pauses at Chester station working the 15.44 Llandudno to Manchester Airport service. Quite where these units will end up when they are replaced in the next twelve months I am not at all sure. After their recent full overhaul, they are too good to be disposed of surely?

153922, 153320, 158824 & 158835, AW 15.06 Birmingham International-Holyhead (1D15, 5L), Chetser station
 Up for imminent replacement.

A six-car train cobbled together service made up of four different units! Transport for Wales' 15.06 Birmingham International to Holyhead is made up of 153922, 153320, 158824 and 158835. The train arrived from behind me on Chester's platform three and is about to retrace its steps to Roodee Junction to the west of Chester where it heads westwards along the North Wales coast to its destination. With the imminent arrival of new units trains such as this made up of a hotch-potch of older and somewhat unsuitable stock should be a thing of the past.
