Leaving my wife at the hotel for an hour or so with her book for company I nipped out on my Brompton to one of my 'go-to' spots from the 1980s when I lived in Cheltenham, namely Coddy (or Cloddymoor) bridge just to the south of the station. It was all reassuringly familiar but for the new bridge, that Network Rail had installed to replace the delightfully rickety affair that I remembered!

170272, AW 16.46 Cheltenham-Maesteg (2L65, RT), Cloddy bridge
One of the operating extremities of Transport for Wales/Trafnidiaeth Cymru's network is Cheltenham with return services between there and Maesteg via Cardiff thus offering the travelling public an alternative to using CrossCountry. However, TfW still uses the same units as XC in the form of Class 170s but the former's examples have undergone a refresh following their acquisition from Greater Anglia. 170272 gets away from Cheltenham past Cloddy bridge working the 2L65 16.26 Cheltenham to Maesteg service.

170110, XC 15.45 Cardiff C-Nottingham (1M73, 1L), Coddy bridge
170110 approaches Cheltenham at Cloddy bridge working the 15.45 Cardiff Central to Nottingham service. This is one of my least photographed Class 170s with just one other image to date back in the autumn of 2019, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/27787350004/x170110-13-45-cardiff-central-nottingham

221135, XC 08.20 Aberdeen-Plymouth (1V60, 1L), Cloddy bridge
Voyager 221135 passes Cloddy bridge in the suburbs of Cheltenham working the 08.20 Aberdeen to Plymouth service. What a way to make a journey it must be from the northeast of Scotland to the southwest in what is, after all, a five-car DMU with its cramped and plastic (Formica type) interior!

800021, GW 16.59 Cheltenham-London Paddington (1L84, 1L), Cloddy bridge
After a short layover in Alstone sidings just north of Cheltenham station IET 800021 passes Cloddy bridge heading back to London working the 16.59 Cheltenham to Paddington 1L84 service. Back in the 1980s, I stood on this bridge photographing the very same services but then they had a Class 50 or a 47 hauling a set of air conditioned Mk. II stock; how things have changed!

220008 & 220003, XC 14.27 Plymouth-Edinburgh Waverley (1S55, RT), Cloddy bridge
A pair of CrossCountry Voyagers slow for their stop at Cheltenham Spa as they pass Cloddy bridge in the town's southwestern suburbs. 220008 and 220003 are working the 14.27 Plymouth to Edinburgh 1S55 service.

170398, XC 15.07 Nottingham-Cardiff Central (1V12, RT), Cloddy bridge
With the Cotswold escarpment in the background, 170398 leaves Cheltenham past Cloddy bridge working the 1V12 15.07 Nottingham to Cardiff Central service. As can be seen from the skyscape, the weather was not particularly kind on this early April afternoon with a keen and chilly wind also blowing making me once again think that maybe I should be somewhere more pleasant than standing on an exposed bridge watching trains pass!

170205, AW 15.15 Maesteg-Cheltenham (2G64, 1L), Cloddy bridge
Transport for Wales' 170205 approaches Cheltenham and the end of its journey as the 15.15 from Maesteg. Sporting its new TfW livery is by way of a stark comparison to the last time that I photographed this unit then in its drab Greater Anglia livery, see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/24556556804/x170205-2w17-elmswell-station

166220, GW 16.43 Great Malvern-Westbury (2C28, RT), Cloddy bridge
GWR's 166220 leaves Cheltenham passing Cloddy bridge working the 2C28 16.43 Great Malvern to Westbury service. After all my years of railway photography this appears to be my first image of this particular Turbo unit; quite how it has eluded my lens for so many years remains a mystery!

800006, GW 15.28 London Paddington-Cheltenham (1G21, RT), Cloddy bridge
Approaching the end of its journey 800006 slows as it passes Cloddy bridge in Cheltenham. The five-car IET, working the 15.28 from Paddington, seems to be a poor replacement for an HST set that used to operate these services. Notice the poor unfortunate pheasant that has attached itself to the front of the train that would be suffering from a little more than just a headache!

221141, XC 16.42 Birmingham New Street-Plymouth (1V61, RT), Cloddy bridge
The 1V61 16.42 Birmingham New Street to Plymouth CrossCountry service leaves Cheltenham past Cloddy bridge worked by 221141. The legacy of its Virgin CrossCountry times still is clear to see on the nose of the Voyager with the outline shape of the Virgin crest still evident and this is some fifteen years on from their operation of the units!
