On arrival at Newark station, Andy and I simply changed platforms by walking over the level crossing. After a short wait, the same unit that we had travelled in on arrived back again after crossing over to the east of the station. We then took this unit again all the way to its destination a Crewe cutting a swathe all the way through the north Midlands from east to west.

170532, EM 11.36 Newark Castle-Crewe (1K63, 3L), Newark Castle station
With our planned run to Lincoln having to be abandoned due to a lack of a suitable return service we simply took the same unit that we had arrived at Newark Castle on back again after it had run round just northeast of the station. 170532 drifts back into the station as the ECS move ready for us to board again and work as the 11.36 to Crewe. These refurbished Class 170 have pleasant and airy interiors but depending upon where you sit the engines can make their presence known in the cabin!

170417, 158770, 37254, 56087 & No.11, stabled, Nottingham Eastcroft
Nottingham's Eastcroft depot has become a busy place in recent years. Indeed, from passing trains, there is too much to try and record on a pad without the use of some sort of electronic aid! Andy was grateful for my camera and my extra pair of eyes as he is far more of a number collector than I am! In this view, two versions of the same TOCs liveries are represented on the extreme left with EMR's 170417 and 158770 seen. In the middle distance stabled at Colas' facility are 37254 'Cardiff Canton' and 56087 with their resident shunter No. 11 attached to the front of the Grid.

222009, stabled, Derby Etches Park
On the approach to Derby station, there is almost too much for the spotter to see with a mass collection of largely vintage locomotives at REVL's headquarters on the left and the smart Etches Park depot to the right. Looking back towards the latter in this wide-angled view 222009 is seen stabled. One of Network Rail's yellow HST trains can just be seen to the extreme right outside REVL's facility.

67017, stabled & Andy, Crewe LNWR
On the approach to Crewe from the direction of Stoke-on-Trent trains pass relatively slowly past LNWR's depot which often contains trainsets and locomotives from a variety of operators. With Andy's reflection making it appear that he is looking in the wrong direction one of Transport for Wales/Trafnidiaeth Cymru super train sets is seen stabled with 67017 on the end. Thier red and silver livery certainly strikes a pose looking a lot smarter than the previous operators' rather weak blue paint scheme.
