Rather than do what most sensible people would be doing on a chilly December Saturday evening I took the tube from High Street Kensington to King's Cross via a change at Edgware Road. This was in order to capture the return of The Lindum Fayre charter hauled by streamlined Pacific 60009 'Union of South Africa'.

43316, GR 22.00 London King's Cross-Leeds (1D34), London King's Cross station
In a nod to one of my early photographic styles, I have adopted this low-down view at Kings's Cross station of the rear of the 22.00 departure to Leeds. Back in the 1970s, I seemed to favour this particular position for a number of my photographs, for example, see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25304839604/x55021-1000-london-kings-cross-edinburgh that was also taken a King's Cross back in 1978. HST power car 43316 will power at the rear of the train that is the final down departure from London to Leeds of the day.

Two very different machines stand on the blocks at King's Cross on this dark and chilly Saturday night. To the left National Express DVT 82217 will soon depart the short distance to Bounds Green depot at the rear of the 5Y23 empty coaching stock working whilst HST power car 43467 has recently arrived leading Grand Central's 17.29 from Sunderland.

365525, GN 21.23 London King's Cross-Peterborough (1P78) & class 365, GN 20.15 Cambridge-London King's Cross (1C21), London King's Cross station
I was just too late to capture a pair of Great Northern Class 365s side by side at Kings' Cross. An unidentified unit departs in a mass of blurred light working the 20.15 service to Cambridge whilst 365525 has some time until it departs with the 1P78 21.23 to Peterborough. Another example of why I love night photography so much is with a whole new dimension being brought to the images in terms of the quality of lighting.

Despite it being past 21.00 King's Cross remains busy as witnessed by this view from the concourse inside the fine train shed. From left to right......

60009, return leg of The Lindum Fayre, 19.10 Lincoln-London King's Cross (1Z47) & 43316, GR 22.00 London King's Cross-Leeds (1D34), London KIng's Cross station
60009 'Union of South Africa' makes for a fine sight just after arriving at King's Cross with the returning Lindum Fayre charter that not unsurprisingly originated from Lincoln! Despite arriving some five minutes early no time has been wasted affixing the tail light to the front of the A4 for its final run of the day back to Southall via a reversal at Ferme Park. Evidently, all went well with this charter with passengers having a few hours in Lincoln to explore its narrow and steep streets complete with its very popular Christmas market. Next to the charter HST power car 43316 will bring up the rear of the 22.00 East Coast service to Leeds.

57313, 22.18 London King's Cross-Southall WCR ECS (5Z48), London King's Cross station
57313 waits at the rear of the 22.18 King's Cross to Southall empty coaching stock working. The Class 57 will lead the stock from the Lindum Fayre charter that has just arrived at King's Cross with 60009 'Union of South Africa' at the head. It is a testament to the technology in modern digital cameras that a photograph like this can be taken handheld in such poor lighting and still look half good. Try doing this forty years ago using Kodachrome 64, with a tripod required and an exposure would be in the region of twenty-five seconds or so!

Cab, 57313, 22.18 London King's Cross-Southall WCR ECS (5Z48), London King's Cross station
The interior of 57313 is seen through the side window as it stands at Kings's Cross. Soon, the driver will enter the cab and take the empty coaching stock from The Lindum Fayere charter the short distance to Ferme Park. Here, the Class 57 would run round and then take the train back to WCR's Southall base adjacent to the GWML.

Gently sitting and simmering on the blocks at King's Cross 60009 'Union of South Africa' understandebly was catching the attention of the late night normals going about their business. It had arrived earlier having lead The Lindum Fayre charter inbound. The stock and locomotive will soon be dragged back out to Ferme Park and then back to WCR's base at Southall for servicing.
