M51192 & M56352, 09.45 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling Heath TG100412
Under an intense blue autumn sky, the first service of the day on the North Norfolk Railway crosses Kelling Heath. A Class 101 DMU made up of cars M51192 and M56352 works the 09.45 Sheringham to Holt service seen passing a nice reproduction whistle sign warning people around a popular and busy footpath crossing just near to the tall trees to the right of the photograph.

92203, 10.30 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling bank
Sometimes things just come together but in railway photography, this is the exception rather than the rule! In intense bright autumn sunshine 92203 'Black Prince' ascends Kelling bank between Weybourne and Holt working the North Norfolk Railway's 10.30 Sheringham to Holt service. The inclusion of the sea, to the detriment of having the entire train in view, and the driver leaning from the cab adds to the scene but the only issue for me is that the sun has not quite come around far enough to fully illuminate the front of the 9F.

92203, 12.00 Sheringham-Holt, Holt station
92203 'Black Prince' arrives at Holt station leading the 12.00 from Sheringham. It is about to pass the rebuilt Type e Midland signal box the top of which came from the Midland Centre at Butterley. It is built on a new base that appears to be made of dense concrete blocks (mistakenly often referred to as breeze blocks). Thes style looks decidedly odd and I am not at all sure that it is in keeping with a Midland box dating from this era, advice and thoughts anybody?

92203, running round, Holt station
David Sheperd's 9F 92203 'Black Prince' runs round its stock at Holt station. This manoeuvre at the North Norfolk Railway's western terminus means that return services have to run tender first. There are discussions taking place about installing a turntable meaning an end to tender first operations but equally, there are plans to extend the line another mile or so parallel with the A148 to a new terminus much closer to Holt's town centre.

Amongst a fine array of semaphore signalling at Holt that includes no less than three reproduction somersault signals 92203 'Black Prince' runs around in order to then rejoin its stock to work back to Sheringham station.

The driver of 92203 'Black Prince' studies carefully the route ahead of him as he slowly guides 9F 92203 'Black Prince' on to the stock of the 12.45 Holt to Sheringham service at Holt station. Inching a great big hulking locomotive the size of a 9F requires considerable skill with his face being a picture of concentration being guided by his fireman.

The driver and fireman of 9F 2-10-0 92203 'Black Prince' peer down their train waiting for the guard to give them the right away. Their locomotive is a fine example of what is widely regarded as the pinnacle of steam locomotive design. The 9Fs came very late to the British railway network with the vast majority being introduced to service after many of the first-generation diesel were in use! 92203 was built at Swindon entering service in April 1959 being withdrawn in November 1967 giving it a paltry eight years in use.

M51192 & M56352, 15.45 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling Heath Park station
After arrival back at Kelling from our bike ride, I walked down to the North Norfolk Railway in the late afternoon falling light. With no passengers alighting or joining the 15.45 Sheringham to Holt it pauses at Kelling Heath station it makes ready to leave with the guard about to give the buzzer two rapid presses. The Class 101 DMU is formed of M51192 and M56352 that both look a little worse for wear with rather faded green paintwork.

With the day having been characterised by a brilliant blue autumn sky it appears as though a front is moving in from the west in this view at Kelling Heath on the North Norfolk Coast. Class 101 DMU made up of M51192 and M56352 get away from Kelling Heath station with the final country bound service of the day, the 15.45 Sheringham to Holt. After the train had clattered away into the distance I enjoyed a lovely walk back through the woods in the early half-light kicking the fallen leaves as I went!
