Returning from my late father's house in Wiltshire I took a 'comfort' break at South Marston just west of Swindon. The sun was out on this pleasant Autumn afternoon with me capturing an up and a down freight within fifteen minutes.

43196, GW 07.41 Penzance-London Paddington (1A16), South Marston foot crossing SU193869
With the sun having just popped behind a cloud the 07.41 Penzance to Paddington HST service passes South Marston near Swindon with power car 43196 leading. This service is one of a number of West of England trains that take the Bristol route rather than via the more normal Berks. and Hants. line. In this view looking westwards, there is absolutely no evidence of the forthcoming electrification that is now hopelessly behind schedule however, there was a closure notice attached to the style of the foot crossing where I was standing.

66035, 10.35 Acton-Moreton-on-Lugg (6B35), South Marston foot crossing SU193869
Taken from the security of a foot crossing at South Marston just east of Swindon a smart-looking 66035 heads an empty ballast train. The 6B35 10.35 Acton to Moreton-on-Lugg service will travel westwards via the GWML to South Wales before then heading northwards along the Marches line at Maindee Junction. At Moreton-on-Lugg the wagons will be filled with gravel extracted from Tarmac's quarry that looks as though it is going to be expanded if the plans go through.

43163, GW 11.55 Cardiff Central-London Paddington (1L54), South Marston foot crossing SU193869
43163, with its unique 'Plymouth-Britain's Ocean City' livery passes South Marston just a short distance east of Swindon with the 1L54 11.55 Cardiff to Paddington service. The full-body vinyls have recently been applied with this power car previously carrying advertising promoting Singapore Airlines of all things! 43163 was the rear power car of the 10.32 Swansea to Paddington service that collided with a stone train at Southall on 19.09.97. It survived but the leading car, 43173, was cut up. Unfortunately, seven people died in the crash.

The empty wagons are going to the Kent virtual quarry to collect gravel to be returned to Westbury for use by the infrastructure teams.
