Prior to a blood donning session in the local village hall, I was able to capture the passage of an interesting working, the 0Z43 from Alton to Derby Etches Park conveying an interesting collection of locomotives back from the Mid Hants. (Watercress) Line.

57315, 31271 & 31466, 09.22 Alton-Etches Park (OZ43), Roade cutting
I had been tracking the progress of the 0Z43 all day with it due to pass through Roade a short time before my booked time for donating blood. If it started to lose time I would be forced to miss it but, fortunately, it was running bang-on time so it is seen here passing through the cutting. Led by WCR's 57315 31271 'Stratford 1840-2001' and 31466 are running as the 09.22 Alton to Derby Etches Park. The duo of Class 31s are firm favourites on the heritage line circuit being popular for rail galas providing some double-headed English Electric relief for enthusiasts!

31466, 31271 & 57315, 09.22 Alton-Etches Park (OZ43), Roade cutting
Looking superb in its early EWS reproduction paint scheme 31466 brings up the rear of the 0Z43 09.22 Alton to Derby Etches Park move. Introduced into service in June 1959 to Norwich Thorpe it completed forty-one years in service being withdrawn in 2001. Thankfully, it was saved from cutting and is now a firm favourite on the heritage lines as part of their diesel galas. Sandwiched in the centre is 31271 'Stratford 1840-2001' that also is popular with enthusiasts, indeed the two were returning from the Mid Hants. Line following gala duties. They are being led by WCR's rather drab-looking 57315.

Class 221, VT 12.43 London Euston-Edinburgh Waverley (9S70), Roade cutting
An unidentified Class 221 Voyager passes through Roade cutting working the 12.43 Euston to Edinburgh Virgin service. A single set five coach DMU (even if it can do one hundred and twenty-five miles per hour) all the way to Edinburgh from London under 25Kv wires......come on!

86622 & 86632, 10.10 Tilbury-Crewe Basford Hall (4M54), Roade cutting
Classic traction passes through Roade cutting in the form of veteran AC1s 86622 and 86632. They are working the 4M54 10.10 Tilbury to Crewe Basford Hall Freightliner service. After entering service on the WCML in the summer of 1965 as E3174 the leading locomotive went through a number of identities. From TOPS on 01.01.73 it became 86022, then from May 1980 it was 86322, from November 1985 it changed again to become 86422 and finally into this, probably its final number in the spring of 1990. 86632 is a year younger dating from 1966 and went through the same pattern of number changes throughout its life.

66421, 12.37 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L48), Roade cutting
Just missing the sun deep in the cutting due to an errant cloud regular DRS stalwart 66422 leads the equally as regular 4L48 12.37 Daventry (DIRFT) to Purfleet container train. With no more interesting trains due it was now time to walk the short distance to the village hall to donate blood!
