On a beautiful early autumn morning with a chill in the air and some mist hanging about I took a lovely walk across the fields from home to capture the passage of the up Highland Sleeper. Later in the day, I popped out again to see former LMS 4-6-0 46100 'Royal Scot' passing in preparation of railtour duties the following day.

66716, 03.10 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (Cancelled from Crewe Basford Hall) (4M18, 1E), Ashton Road bridge
66716 'Locomotive & Carriage Institution Centenary 1911-2011' emerges from the autumnal mist as the sun just breasts the horizon to the east that is not able to illuminate the train just yet! The 4M18 03.10 Felixstowe to Trafford Park is seen approaching Roade in Northamptonshire that, later in its journey was terminated early on arrival at Crewe Bashford Hall. It appears as if 66716 has been involved in hauling a stone train of some kind given the extensive white dust adoring its leading cab.

92010, 20.45 Inverness & 19.50 Fort William-London Euston (1M16, RT), Ashton Road bridge
Not yet in the early morning sunshine 92010 leads the 1M16 up Highland sleeper past Roade in South Northamptonshire. With Caledonian Sleeper in all sorts of difficulties, it will have been pleased that today the train ran bang on time with arrival into Euston some forty minutes after this photograph was taken.

46100, 07.57 Crewe HS-Southall Loco Services Ltd (5Z45, 8E), between Roade & Ashton
I was hoping that this location at this time in the morning would have produced a slightly better photograph of 46100 'Royal Scot' but the sun had just gone round too far so as to not illuminate the side of the locomotive necessitating some Photoshop work to bring some detail back to the deep shadows. The former LMS Stanier was working the 07.57 Crewe HS to Southall positioning complete with a support coach in order to work the following day's 'Severn Valley Enterprise' charter from Paddington to Kidderminster.
