Having returned from Liverpool earlier in the day I popped out again after dinner in my Combo van to see the return of 'The Cheshireman' charter hauled by 'Tornado'. After a gloomy grey day the cloud melted away and I was rewarded with some superb evening light at my chosen location.

In lovely warn evening light 319218 and 319012 work the 18.19 Euston to Northampton evening commuter service. It is services such as this that the pandemic may well put paid to as city workers continuing to change the way that they work choosing home rather than the office for most if not all of their working week.

I had selected this location to capture the passage of the returning charter that was due to pass this spot in about half an hour's time. However, as one can see I misjudged the position of the setting sun with almost all of this train now in the shade; an urgent plan B was needed! 88006 hauls the empty 16.49 Garston to Dagenham car transporters past Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. Once again there are just three solitary vehicles on this train rather like when I saw it last time, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30015904775/x88006-15-49-garston-dagenham-6l48 and I still none the wiser as to why this is? Notice the red lorry in the top left corner of the photograph heading north on the nearby M1.

In order to capture the returning steam charter, I had to reposition myself slightly further towards Northampton at Milton Malsor. Only having my short steps with me I was grateful once again for my camera's fold-out viewing screen! By way of practice, 350243 passes working the 20.06 Northampton to Euston train.

60163, return leg of The Cheshireman, 16.13 Chester-London Euston (1Z65, 2L), Milton Malsor SP737561
Looking its usual resplendent self 60163 'Tornado' climbs hard away from Northampton at Milton Malsor leading the return Cheshireman charter. Running as 1Z65 the train left Chester at 16.13 and was heading back to London Euston. This charter was to have run two days later on the coming Saturday but due to operational difficulties, it was brought forward. It is remarkable to think that 'Tornado' has been on the mainline for thirteen years now; where has all that time gone?
