What a farce! It was all so straightforward, a journey from Northampton to Liverpool with two changes at Rugby and Crewe but London Northwestern had other ideas! It started at Northampton with our advertised train simply not appearing on departure screens. Only when we asked did staff inform us that it was canceled and that we should take a different service due to start from the station within two minutes. We climbed aboard this one as the doors were closing but on alighting at Rugby, and for some totally unexplained reason, our connecting train onwards from there was canceled and we were told that there was a bus waiting outside the station. However, that was full and looking 'COVIDly uncomfortable' and with no other one apparently on its way, we requested to continue our journey by train on another route. To be fair to the lady in the ticket office, she did arrange this issuing us with some replacement tickets enabling us to travel via Birmingham New Street. However, this added over an hour to our journey but this was by far preferable to a crowded and possibly even later bus trip. After waiting an hour at Rugby for the next London Northwestern train to Birmingham the rest of the journey was fine. Of course, in the past and in far more sensible and non-privatised days we could have hopped on the next train to New Street but as that was an Avanti service this was not permitted!

Incidentally, the day did not get any better as later in the evening England went and lost on penalties (again!) to Italy in the UEFA EURO 2020 (played in 2021 off course) final at Wembley.

350377 & 350260, LN 11.55 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2T87, 3L), Rugby station
The train that we almost missed from Northampton due to a total lack of communication by London Northwestern staff. 350377 and 350260 depart from Rugby working the 11.55 Northampton to Birmingham New Street service that we managed to catch by the skin of our teeth! However, any hopes of carrying on from here as planned were dashed when we were directed to a very crowded bus at the station entrance. We were not happy doing this as the bus was far too crowded with no social distancing in place. We requested alternative train tickets via Birmingham New Street. This was duly arranged but the total lack of communication by London Northwestern staff both here at Rugby and previously at Northampton was simply appalling for what appeared to be planned engineering reasons rather than a more unplanned crisis. Had it not been for my knowledge of the working of the railways we would have been put in an even worse situation; this should not have been the case.

390119, VT 11.40 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G08, RT), Rugby station
I have been attempting to photograph 390119 'Progress' since it was vinyl wrapped and named last year on 11.10.20. always appearing to have just missed it! Here it arrives at Rugby station with the 11.40 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. I have seen some awful and bigoted comments on social media from so-called railway 'enthusiasts' about the work done to this Pendolino with lines such as 'we don't want this ramming down our throats'. My message to these zealots is, don't look at this Pendolino when it races past you and don't take any photographs if a brightly coloured train offends you!

350129, LN 12.55 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2T85, 1L), Rugby station
The second and very delayed part of our journey from Northampton to Liverpool arrives at Rugby station. We boarded this train in order to get to Birmingham New Street instead of our planned journey via the Trent Valley route. 350129 and an unidentified 350/4 are working the 12.55 Northampton to Birmingham service.

350403, LN 14.35 Birmingham New Street-Liverpool Lime Street (1F51, 5L), Liverpool Lime Street station
Of our three-part journey from Northampton to Liverpool, we managed to travel in two Class 350/4 sets. These ten sets are infinitely better than the other Class 350 subsets (350/1/2 and 3) with more comfortable and better-placed seats and being in much better internal condition. 350403 leads another unit after its arrival at Liverpool Lime Street having worked the 1F51 14.35 from Birmingham New Street. This platform used to be the preserve of Virgin and Avanti services but since the remodelling of Lime Street, these services have moved to the right of this image to platform nine.

Tickets, Northampton-Liverpool Lime Street
Our tickets from Northampton to Liverpool are shown along with the revised journey ticket issued to us at Rugby. This followed a debacle created by London Northwestern completely of its own making through a total lack of communication!
