34. The Settle & Carlisle Pullman-12.06.21

On a beautiful summer morning, I headed to the Oxford to Birmingham line just south of Banbury to capture the passage of the Pullman liveried HST on railtour duties. I really should have checked the internet before I left home as the train was heavily delayed leaving Bristol with a brake fault. By the time I reached King's Sutton and checked my 'phone, it was only passing Keynsham over an hour away! I consoled myself with it being such a lovely warm morning and I actually enjoyed the wait sitting in a summer meadow on my trusty stool watching other trains pass by!

221135 & 220119, XC 06.17 Southampton-Manchester Piccadilly (1M22, 21L), King's Sutton
A classic and timeless scene just north of King's Sutton in Northamptonshire - but only just! To the right of the photograph across the meadow is the River Cherwell along which follows the county boundary with Oxfordshire. In fact, this stretch of line that runs from Souldern for about six miles to a spot just north of where I am standing is the only point that the original GWR constructed its own railway in the county of Northamptonshire. 221135 and 220119 pass this bucolic scene with the 1M22 06.17 Southampton to Manchester service.

66720, 05.48 Southampton Western Docks-Doncaster iport (4E34, 4L), King's Sutton
66720 leads the 05.48 Southampton Docks to Doncaster iport service past King's Sutton in some lovely early morning sunshine that is a little backlit even by this time in the morning just gone 8 am. The GBRf Class 66 certainly strikes quite a pose wearing its one-off special livery with a rainbow and bright paintings on the bodyside with a different nocturnal design on the other side. The vinyls were applied back in 2011 following a competition that was won by a then six-year-old Emily Goodman who was the daughter of a trainee GBRf driver at March.

221141 & 221120, XC 05.11 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournemouth (1O04, 11L), King's Sutton
If this had been a single Voyager it would have just fitted in the space between the front and the greenery to the centre top right. Unfortunately, the 1O04 05.11 Manchester to Bournemouth CrossCountry service was composed of 221141 and 221120 with the latter just out of sight around the curve. The train is seen approaching King's Sutton just south of Banbury. Notice that the leading Voyager is suffering from the perennial problem of condensation filling the headlight.

165126, GW 08.06 Didcot Parkway-Banbury (2M10, 2L), King's Sutton SP491367
From Penzance, to west Wales, to Worcester, to Paddington and here in Northamptonshire the GWR franchise covers the largest and most diverse geographical area of all TOCs. 165126 has just left King's Sutton working the 2M10 08.06 Didcot to Banbury service. The photograph is taken from a foot crossing that permits access to the meadows through which the River Cherwell flows.

43055, outward leg of the Settle & Carlisle Pullman, 06.49 Bristol Temple Meads-Carlisle (1Z14, 28L), King's Sutton SP491367
HST power car 43055 looks stunning in Nanking blue with its matched set of Mk.III vehicles as it passes King's Sutton on the Northamptonshire/Oxfordshire border. Running exactly an hour late at this point in its journey the former East Midlands HST power car is leading the outward leg of 'The Settle and Carlisle Pullman' that was due to have left Bristol at 06.49 but eventually got away at 07.35 following the rectification of a braking issue.

43046, outward leg of The Settle & Carlisle Pullman, 06.49 Bristol Temple Meads-Carlisle (1Z14, 28L), King's Sutton SP491367
43046 'Geoff Drury 1930-1999' powers the rear of 'The Settle and Carlisle Pullman' charter that was scheduled to leave Bristol Temple Meads at 06.49 for a run to Carlisle and back via the fabled 'long drag'. Unfortunately, for passengers and linesiders alike, the 1Z14 left nearly an hour late due to a brake issue only managing to catch up half an hour throughout its outward journey. The train is seen passing the water meadows near King's Sutton with this view taken from the security of a public foot crossing. It's interesting to note that the Pullman power cars have been in receipt of new front end lights enabling them to operate without the hi-viz yellow warning panels bringing an extra air of authenticity!
