33. 5V42 ECS-10.06.21

After a day out shopping with my wife, I made it back home for my afternoon walk that happened to coincide with the passage of a 5V42 ECS working due to be hauled by a pair of WCR Class 47s. I fully expected them to be in top and tail mode but was delighted, and somewhat surprised, to see them pass double heading. I also managed to capture no fewer than five freight trains in the short period prior to the arrival of the West Coast Railways working.

319217 & 319429, LN 17.51 Northampton-Bletchley CS ECS (5B73, 6E), Roade cutting
London Northwestern still retains a small number of Class 319 ex-Thameslink units for use on various peak hour services. However, given the massive reduction in passenger numbers due to COVID, I am not at all sure how much use they are actually getting! Having run up to Northampton from Euston a little earlier 319217 leads 319429 as the 17.51 Northampton to Bletchley empty stock working. The two units, that are in different liveries, pass through Roade cutting.

47254 & 47772, 11.23 Carnforth-Southall WCR (5V42, 23E), Roade Hyde Road bridge
I was really pleased to see that the 11.23 Carnforth to Southall WCR's empty stock move was double-headed rather than in top and tail mode as it appeared around the curve in the distance in Roade cutting. However, it did require a quick adjustment to the focal length of the lens as I had set it up to fit a single locomotive in the space between the bridge I'm standing on and the first electrification mast. 47254 and 47772 just miss the afternoon sun with it not quite reaching the depths of the cutting this late in the day but it does reveal the significant levels of exhaust behind the train!
