In retrospect, this leg of our tour of the West Midlands should be described as heading into the dragon's den! After making the short walk from Birmingham's New Street to Moor Street station we could immediately see that there were problems with services south of Birmingham towards Kidderminster but exactly where and what the issues were was not being made clear to passengers. The internet provided no further information but did indicate that the problem should be cleared by 16.00 so we made the decision to head that way rather than the alternative plan B that of heading to Stratford-on-Avon and Leamington; as it turned out, this was the wrong choice!

The two variants of liveries applied to Chiltern's units can be seen in this photograph. To the left, 168001 wears its silver scheme whilst 165008 still has the older style white and blue paint scheme. The former will soon leave Birmingham's Moore Street station with the 15.15 to Marylebone whilst the latter will work the 15.35 stopper to Leamington Spa. Whilst both these trains were a little late into their destinations this was nowhere near as bad as trains heading in the other direction; as we were to find out!

172334, LN 14.28 Birmingham Moore Street-Stratford-on-Avon (Cancelled from Kidderminster) (1S48, RT), Birmingham Moore Street station
172334 emerges into the warm late afternoon sunshine from the gloom of the reopened (from 1987) six hundred and thirty-five yards long Snow Hill tunnel. The West Midlands Railway unit is working an empty coaching stock train from Kidderminster as 1S48. It will soon depart from Moore Street as the 14.28 service to Stradford-on-Avon. The reasons for this unusual move was chaos in the Kidderminster/Droitwich area caused by some sort of signalling issue with Andy and I heading straight into it!

172222, LN 14.26 Stratford-on-Avon-Kidderminster (Cancelled from Stourbridge Junction) (2K55, 21L), Birmingham Moor Street station
Andy and I had intended to catch this West Midlands Railway service to Kidderminster but as it arrived it was clearly already busy and there were many passengers waiting to board here at Birmingham Moor Street. As there was another, also delayed, service not too far behind we opted to wait a little longer for that. The 14.26 Stratford-on-Avon to Kidderminster is being worked by 172222 that if we had boarded we would only have got as far as Stourbridge Junction as it was terminated there after arriving some twenty-one minutes late.

172006, LN 15.09 Dorridge-Worcester Foregate Street (2V45, 25L), Birmingham Moore Street station
This train was just five minutes behind the previous one that we were going to catch at Birmingham Moore Street. However, whilst the earlier train was packed and not at all COVID secure this one was relatively empty even after picking up numerous school children during its journey. We took 172006 working the 15.09 Dorridge to Worcester Foregate Street as far as Droitwich but all was not plain sailing! It made very slow progress beyond Stourbridge at a pedestrian pace with frequent stops suggesting that there was some sort of track circuit failure. We had intended to head to Worcester in order to then return to New Street via the Midland route however our plans were modified after a twenty-five-minute late arrival at Droitwich. I have to report that there absolutely no information provided to passengers who just sat and put up with it. The guard did not emerge from the rear cab of the train and made no announcements over the pa system. The travelling public can accept delays if they are kept informed with an adequate explanation but with no updates, like us, they just seethe and get resentful; not a great way to encourage passengers back on to the railways! There was almost a repeat on arrival at Droitwich with the display screens being inaccurate in their information and scrolling far too quickly to be able to make sense of. The member of staff on duty also made no attempt to let the many confused and increasingly bewildered passenger know what to do for the best; much to improve on here West Midlands Railway!
