Despite having just over a month of my contract left and having sent in my resignation letter I stood by my colleagues and took part in a day of industrial action relating not to pay but to conditions of service and work load issues. Making good use of my time I went to Northampton station and enjoyed seeing two brand new trains, the Royal Train and taking photographs from the lofty heights of the new and temporary footbridge installed as part of the rebuilding of the station.

Two London Midland Desiros pause at Northampton station. To the left 350244 is working the 09.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston 1W08 service whist 350105 pauses with the 09.49 Euston to New Street train. This is a common scene at Northampton with these unit operating virtually all of these local services between the two cities.

The temporary station footbridge installed at Northampton offers lofty views of the station. The new footbridge that has been built to link the new building to the platforms looks to be complete in this view. 350244 and 350105 wait at the station to work the 09.33 Birmingham New Street to London and the 09.49 Euston to New Street services respectively.

350371 (brand new), stabled, Northampton station Riverside
Brand new and wreaking of fresh paint 350371 stands in Northampton's Riverside siding. It has recently been delivered to London Midland and is undergoing mileage accumulation runs prior to it entering service with the TOC. London Midland has ordered ten of these units to supplement their services on their routes and in preparation for the electrification of the Chase Line from Birmingham to Rugeley. Another ten have also been ordered (designated as 350/4 sub-sets) that are heading north to TransPennine Express.

350244, LM 09.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W08), Northampton station with new station under construction
The re-building of Northampton (Castle) station is well underway with the main building now largely complete. The new station footbridge complete with its lift towers is also looking as though it is largely complete. However, the internal fitting out of the two structures now has to take place and this may well take as much time as the initial construction. 350244 waits under the new bridge ready to work the 09.44 Birmingham New Street to Euston forward.

Platforms 1,2 & 3, Northampton station (from temporary footbridge)
A view from the temporary footbridge installed at Northampton station reveals an interesting view of the two north-facing bay platforms numbered one, two and three. The former platform four has had its track removed with platform three not electrified at present. When the temporary footbridge is removed this unique view will no longer be available.

A diverted Virgin West Coast train makes its way sedately through Northampton station working the 10.23 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. It is passing under the gargantuan temporary passenger footbridge that links the platforms whilst the station undergoes complete redevelopment.

350102, LM 10.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y28), Northampton station
350102 arrives at Northampton station working the 10.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston 1Y28 London Midland service. The brilliant quality of light on summer days such as this is tempered somewhat by the deep shadows created. I have to use my Photoshop skills to bring back the detail in the shadows to avoid vast areas of blackness as could have been the case in this image's case. Notice the buddleia growing quite happily on the platform edge not appearing to be affected by the extremely close passage of trains!

66504, 10.04 Lawley Street-Felixstowe North (4L98), Northampton station
Whilst this section of the WCML is busy for freight during the start and towards the end of the day from approximately 09.00 to 16.00, there is a bit of a dearth of such trains. In its new style, Freightliner livery 66504 takes the centre road through Northampton with the 10.04 Lawley Street to Felixstowe North 4L98 train. Notice the driver nonchalantly hanging his hand and forearm out of the window no doubt hoping for some cooling effect on this hot summer's morning as there is no air conditioning in the cabs of these locomotives.

377707 & 377708, 10.33 Wembley-Rugby crew training, Northampton station
The second new train of the day at Northampton! Southern has ordered eight further Electrostars that are designated 377/7s. They are due to enter service later this year probably from the new timetable in December for use on the Milton Keynes to East Croydon route and certain other busy commuter lines working with the 377/6s that are already in service. 377707 with 377708 at the rear passes through the station as the 10.33 Wembley to Rugby crew training run.

The new dual voltage five-car 377/7 subset of the highly successful Electrostars are due to enter service with Southern later this year (2014). 377708 and 377707 pass through Northampton working the 10.33 Wembley to Rugby crew training run. Whilst in this scene they are working on 25kV AC they are also capable of working on the 650V DC used on the Southern network.

67005, Derby-Wolverton Centre Sidings Royal Train ECS, Northampton station
Movement of the Royal Train, be it when it is carrying members of the family or as ECS is never advertised so catching it is a little hit and miss unless you are in the know! It is seen passing through Northampton station on a Derby to Wolverton ECS move with 67005 'Queen's Messenger' leading the train.

67006, Derby-Wolverton Centre Sidings Royal Train ECS, Northampton station
As a firm republican I am not a fan of the Royal Family by any stretch of the imagination! However, as a railway enthusiast, I am very keen on the continued existence of the Royal Train. I feel that it is vastly underused and it is regarded as a costly extravagance and as such, there is frequent talk of its scrapping. It is maintained at Wolverton Works and this is where it is seen returning to from Derby passing through Northampton station. 66005 'Queen's Messenger' is leading the formation of adapted Mk. III stock whist 67006 'Royal Sovereign' here brings up the rear.
