A Sunday visit to Roade cutting on my bike to capture the regular 4L48 Tesco Express and the passage of one of Network Rail's massive infrastructure trains. Another beautiful spring day following yesterday's grand weather!

321412, LM 11.45 Northampton EMD-Watford Junction ECS (5F17), Roade cutting
London Midland retains a small number of Class 321s to cover commuter services during the morning and evening peaks between Northampton and Euston. They have been repainted into a version of their livery using the recognisable house colours. 321412 passes through Roade cutting working the 5F17 11.45 Northampton to Watford Junction empty coaching stock move.

66623, 08.45 High Oaks Junction-Willesden Euroterminal (6Y15), Roade cutting
66623 'Bill Bolsover' leads the absolutely huge Network Rail 'drain train' through Roade cutting at almost walking pace! Assisting on the rear, out of sight due to the length of the train, is 66523. The so called 'drain train' is composed of high output ballast cleaner (HBOC) units that Network Rail has recently invested fifty million pounds in! This gargantuan train, running as 6Y15, left High Oaks Junction (Rugby) at 08.45 and is making its way very slowly to the Willesden Eurotunnel terminal.

66523, 08.45 High Oaks Junction-Willesden Euroterminal (6Y15), Roade cutting
Working hard at the rear of the 08.45 High Oaks Junction to Willesden Euroterminal 66523 is seen passing through Roade cutting. The length and the weight of the high output ballast cleaner (HBOC) train requires two locomotives with even those being somewhat challenged given the speed that the train was going at that I would have estimated to be twenty miles per hour.

Class 390, VT 10.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A12), Roade cutting
An unidentified Virgin Pendolino passes through Roade cutting working the 1A12 10.35 Manchester to Euston service. With it being spring the hawthorns (Crataegus) are in full flower above the cutting with their tiny white flowers adding a splash of white to the greenery.

Class 390, VT 10.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B15), Roade cutting
Even by late-morning in the middle of May, the sun is not quite round far enough to illuminate the sides of trains passing through Roade cutting. Another Class 390 Pendolino heads south with this one working the 1B15 10.50 Birmingham to Euston Virgin service.

Class 390, VT 11.50 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1G08), Roade cutting
With its draw gear cover partially open, doing nothing for its otherwise sleek aerodynamics a Class 390 Pendolino passes northward through Roade cutting. It is working the 11,50 London Euston to Birmingham New Street 1G08 Virgin service.

350123, LM 11.25 London Euston-Crewe (2Y18), Roade cutting
The 11.25 Euston to Crewe London Midland train passes through Roade cutting on the down slow line. On weekdays this train would not take the Northampton line but use the down fast line via Weedon but not at weekends. 350123 and another unit behind will stop at both Northampton and Long Buckby adding to their journey time.

350130, LM 12.40 Northampton-Milton Keynes ECS (5K20), Roade cutting
350130 passes through a sunny Roade cutting on a superb spring day working the 12.40 Northampton to Milton Keynes Central empty stock working. It was a really pleasantly warm Sunday afternoon to stand and watch the trains pass, very different conditions to so many that we all have endured over the years in the pursuit of our hobby!

Track machine, unidentified up working, Roade cutting
Unfortunately, I was unable to identify both this working and the Colas operated Plasser & Theurer machine switch and crossing tamper operating it! Unlike other units of this type, this particular one has its DR73XXX number written smaller and higher up on the cab side and in this photograph the wires cut right through it making it illegible! Never mind, it's nice to see a bit of Dutch orange brightening up Roade cutting!

350130, LM 11.53 London Euston-Northampton (2N15) & class 390, VT 12.28 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S67), Roade cutting
As London Midland's 350130 passes through Roade cutting working the 11.53 Euston to Northampton service it is overtaken by a Virgin Pendolino. The unidentified Class 390 was working the 1S67 12.38 Euston to Glasgow Central that left London forty-five minutes after the Class 350.

66430, 12.03 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L98), Roade cutting
Despite some empty flats near the front of the train, the 4L98 is long and pretty well loaded disappearing off around the curve in Roade cutting. On this lovely spring Sunday the 12.03 Daventry to Purfleet service, dubbed the Tesco Express, is hauled by DRSs' 66430.

66430, 12.03 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L98), & Class 390, VT 12.37 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H67), Roade cuttinge
Stobart is more associated with their big green lorries rather than with rail. However, since 2006 they have been cutting a furrow on the national network by conveying containers for Tesco with DRS providing the service. One of their regular flows is the 4L98 12.03 (or time thereabouts) from Daventry (DIRFT) to the Purfleet deepwater terminal on the Thames Estuary. It is seen passing through Roade cutting with 66430 leading at the front whilst a Virgin Class 390 speeds north working the 12.37 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.
