Whilst my wife and son took some rest and undertook a bit of shopping at the nearby Downtown retail outlet I spent an hour or so on the ECML. I decided to go to a remote and quiet spot I had on my list of places to visit for some time known as Frinkley Lane near the villages of Marston and Hougham.

180109 works Hull Trains' 14.35 Hull to King's Cross service past Frinkley Lane. Hull Trains have used a variety of stock on their services, usually cast-offs from other operators and the use of the Adelantes is no exception. They have not been the most successful of trains with the fourteen sets beset with reliability issues throughout.

Whilst I am not a fan of Sky due to the activities of its owner Rupert Murdoch and refuse to have anything to do with any of his business interests where possible that includes the reading of any of his rags! However, I did want a photograph of the Sky 1HD 225 set on the ECML. Set BN25 emerged in this striking livery in the autumn of last year with 91125 being the lead locomotive. Working the 15.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh service the set is seen passing Frinkley Lane crossing just north of Grantham.

82230, GR 15.05 Leeds-London King's Cross (1A37), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
In a matching East Coast livery, the 15.05 Leeds to King's Cross 1A37 service races past Frinkley Lane level crossing on a dull may Bank Holiday weekend. It is led by DVT 82230 with an unidentified Class 91 powering at the rear. It warms me to see a state-owned and operated express dong what it should be doing and only goes to reassure me that one day this crazy franchising system that we have in this country will come to end and common sense prevails!

With a lone clump of cowslips (Primula veris) on the embankment 91113 rushes past with the 15.03 London King's Cross to Leeds 1D19 service. The photograph is taken at Frinkley Lane a delightfully remote and quiet, apart from the passage of trains, spot between Grantham and Newark.

43272, GR 13.00 Edinburgh Waverley-London King's Cross (1E16), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
The HSTs have been synonymous with services on the East Coast Mainline since 1977 outlasting the reign of the Deltics by many years! As 43072 this particular power car, now numbered 43272, has been in operation on the line all of its working career being introduced as part of set 254011. I wonder if anybody has any details on the mileages that this power car (and the others for that matter) has clocked up, it will be an extraordinary figure I have no doubt! Adding another three hundred and ninety-three miles to its tally, the HST passes Frinkley Lane on the approach to Granthan working the 13.00 Edinburgh to King's Cross service.

82212, GR 14.15 Newcastle-London King's Cross (1Y38), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
DVT 82212 leads the 1Y38 14.15 Newcastle to King's Cross service past Frinkley Lane a short distance north of Grantham. I have been eyeing up this spot for some time and found it to be gloriously quiet and offering the photographic opportunities that I had hoped for. I wish that I had come here when the Deltics were in operation getting so close to it visiting nearby Hougham just a mile or so north of this spot, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25410442204/x55003-08-20-newcastle-london-kings

180111, HT 14.48 London King's Cross-Hull (1H05), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
Former First Great Western Adelante 180111 races north past Frinkley Lane crossing in Lincolnshire forming Hull Trains' 14.48 King's Cross to Hull service. When this unit transferred to its new operator all that was needed, as part of the much-needed re-fit, to be undertaken to the exterior was the replacement of the FGW logo with Hull Trains as both TOCs are part of the First Group.

43468, GC 14.12 Sunderland-London King's Cross (1A65), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
Buffer fitted 43468 leads Grand Central's 14.12 Sunderland to King's Cross HST service past Frinkley Lane crossing just short distance south of Claypole. Much as I understand why buffer beams were fitted to some HST power cars in the late 1980s due to the late delivery of DVTs to the ECML they really do nothing for the aesthetics of the clean and uncluttered design of the power cars.

43318, GR 09.40 Inverness-London King's Cross (1E17), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
HST power car 43318 has covered four hundred and fifty-two miles of its journey with a mere one hundred and fourteen to go as it leads the 09.49 Inverness to King's Cross past Frinkley Lane between Grantham and Newark. As 43118 this power car was introduced in May 1979 as part of the final allocated set to the ECML, 254032.

91121, GR 15.30 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S23), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
91121 and its set of East Coast liveried stock blends almost seamlessly with the grey sky as it heads north past Frinkley Lane crossing near the former Barkston Junction. Photographs like this on grey days with very flat skies need a fair amount of work in Photoshop to make a reasonable finished product. Like is so often the case and as described in stage two of https://www.ontheupfast.com/technical-notes the sky is selected and worked on before the rest of the image is tackled.

Taken from a place of safety at Frinkley Lane crossing between Grantham and Newark Grand Central's 15.50 King's Cross the Bradford Exchange 1D93 service is seen. 180107 'Hart of the North' is working the train that was a full line speed as it passed me standing by the fence of the former level crossing at Frinkley Lane that is now a footpath and bridleway crossing. I am sure that the two GC drivers exchanged a cheery wave with each other somewhere close to the Claypole loops!

91117, GR 16.00 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S24), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
Named after the famous LNER titled train 91117 'West Riding Limited' powers past Frinkley Lane between Grantham and Newark leading the 16.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh East Coast service. After a disappointingly dull day there were signs to the west of a little brightness in the sky, perhaps the day would end with some sun?

66092, 12.05 Dollands Moor-Scunthorpe Redbourne (4E32), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
66092 makes, what would seem to be, some excess exhaust hauling a relatively light and unloaded train as it passes Frinkley Lane crossing just north of Grantham. The EWS liveried Class 66 is hauling the 4E32 12.05 Dollands Moor to Scunthorpe steel empties. 66092 arrived on our shores in April 1999 and in its fifteen-year life has gone about its business in a pretty anonymous fashion with the highlight probably being it hauling a short section of The Cornubian railtour in 2002, see..... http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/00s/021221pt.htm

With some afternoon sun just illuminating the train, DVT 82206 leads the 16.16 Leeds to King's Cross East Coast service. Interestingly, this train left the Yorkshire capital just a few minutes after I arrived at this spot, Frinkley Lane, earlier in the afternoon!

91106 leads the 16.05 King's Cross to Leeds 1D21 express past Frnkley Lane north of Grantham. With the sun just beginning to emerge from some troublesome cloud the interesting folley named Bellmount Tower can be seen in the background. This structure, constructed in 1750, forms part of the National Trust owned Belton House estate that we are visiting tomorrow.

What a difference an hour or so makes! With the sun now out the illumination of the HST lead by power car 43308 is so much better than https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30012183805/x43272-13-00-edinburgh-waverley-london The East Coast HST is working the 1A18 14.00 Edinburgh to Kin's Cross train. 43308 has always been an East Coast Mainline power car being part of set 254027 as 43108.

In lovely soft late afternoon sunshine, 91129 leads the 16.30 King's Cross to Glasgow Central past Frinkley Lane crossing between Grantham and Newark. The intense and deep greenery of a spring afternoon is clear in this photograph as the plants respond to increasingly high levels of UV light.

The four coaches of Grand Central's 180112 'James Herriot' just fits neatly between the electrification masts at Frinkley Lane crossing just north of Grantham. Looking very smart in its gleaming black livery 180112 was introduced to the ECML in September 2009 after receiving a complete overhaul by Railcare at Wolverton Works.

91118, GR 17.21 Peterborough-Leeds (1D22), Frinkley Lane crossing SK906436
My last photograph of the day at Frinkley Lane crossing and an interesting one! The 17.21 Peterborough to Leeds service is being led by 91118 that still wears its former GNER livery. Over seven years after GNER had ceased to operate on the ECML National Express East Coast did not get around to repainting it and now the state-owned (or directly operated as the government prefer to call it!) East Coast has also done nothing apart from to apply its branding along the white stripe.
