6. The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express & 6X50-01.02.14

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2014 > 6. The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express & 6X50-01.02.14
Two trips out on a very bright and chilly winter Saturday. Firstly, early in the morning to see one of the regular CMEs (Cumbrian Mountain Express) and secondly to see the conveyance of some new stock for TransPennine Express. RTT was having a turn on this morning so no services could be identified. Also, unfortunately, on both trips out the low winter sun created some photographic issues, oh. to live near a railway going west to east rather than south to north!

Class 390, VT, unidentified down working, Milton crossing
With his disposable cup of coffee placed above the cab controls, the driver brings an unidentified Virgin Pendolino past Milton crossing just north of Roade working a down working from Euston. With the sun just coming over the horizon to the far left the glint lighting is suitably subtle rather than glaring as can often be the case with this type of photograph.

Class 390, VT, unidentified up working, Milton crossing
In dramatic early morning lighting, a Virgin Pendolino speeds southwards with an up service for Euston. I am not sure if the driver is shielding his eyes from the rising sun or taking a drink as it sweeps around the curve at Milton crossing on the approach to the north end of Roade cutting.

86259, outward leg of The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express, 07.08 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Milton crossing
86259 'Les Ross' (on this side at least!) makes a fine sight as it sweeps around the curve at Milton crossing having just emerged from the relative darkness of Roade cutting. It is leading the outward leg of The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express that left Euston at 07.08 for Carlisle with the ac electric coming off the train at Carnforth in favour of 45699 'Galatea'. The former LMS Jubilee would then take the train over Shap to Carlisle and southwards over the Settle and Carlisle to Farington Junction where the ac would bring the train back in the evening passing this spot again at 21.15.

Class 390, VT, unidentified down working, Hyde Road bridge
The perils of taking photographs looking due south on a Winter's morning! A class 390 Pendolino speeds through Roade about to pass under Hyde Road bridge with an unidentified northbound service.

Class 221, VT, unidentified down working, Hyde Road bridge
A Class 221 Voyager heads north through Roade about to enter the famous cutting with an unidentified down working. Due to the extreme head-on lighting, an unwanted reflection is visible in the middle of this photograph caused by internal reflection within the lens' structure.

92044, 350406 (& 350407), 04.20 Dollands Moor-Trafford Park new stock move (6X50), Hyde Road bridge
Last year TransPennine Express (TPE) ordered a set of ten new Class 350 Desiros to operate on the Manchester, Preston route to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Capable of one hundred and ten miles per hour they are being built by Siemens Mobility at their German Krefeld factory. The first deliveries have taken place with a number of the 350/4s now in service with TPE. In this photograph, 350406 and 350407 are being towed through Roade seen from Hyde Road bridge by 92044 'Couperin' as the 6X50 04.20 Dollands Moor to Trafford Park.

350407, 04.20 Dollands Moor-Trafford Park new stock move (6X50), Hyde Road bridge
Brand new 350407 is seen sandwiched in between a number of barrier vehicles being towed through Roade by 92044 'Couperin' out of sight on the front. The Desiro is heading for Manchester as the 6X50 from Dollands Moor for work with TransPennine Express on their Anglo Scottish route from the North West to Glasgow and Edinburgh. 350407 is one of ten Siemens Desiros that have been ordered by TPE some of which are already in service. They are slightly different to the other subsets of the same class as they have been modified for one hundred and ten miles per hour operation and have an interior very similar to TPE's existing fleet of Class 185s.
