Our annual trip to the Northampton and Lamport Railway on a chilly and grey New Year's Day. After an awful end to 2013 for our family, we were hoping for a distinctly better 2014!

47205, running as 47395, 11.00 Pitsford & Brampton return, Pitsford sidings
Having propelled the 11.00 ex Pitsford and Brampton New Year's Day special as far as Pitsford sidings to the south of the NLR 47205 masquerading as 47395 is getting underway again this time leading. It will work as far a Merry Tom Lane to the north of the station whence it will return again. The Pitsford Sidings signal box can be seen that was once located within Wolverton works before moving a few miles north to its new home here on the NLR.

47205, running as 47395, 12.00 Pitsford & Brampton return, Pitsford & Brampton station
2014 New Year's Day is pretty poor with miserable weather but at least we have got out! 47205 stands at Pitsford and Brampton station having worked the 11.00 return 'Mince Pie (and sherry!) Special'. 47205 is the railway's mainstay diesel locomotive with long term resident 31289 currently out of service and receiving some much-needed restoration work. As 205 it was withdrawn by Freightliner in late 2001 entering preservation in 2004. The NLR run the loco. as 47395 at this end as BR renumbered it as this from March 1994 until July 1995 during its time as a Channel Tunnel DEAT pool locomotive adapted for multiple working identified by the ugly jumper connection in the centre of the headcode plate.

The NLR has done a super job repainting a very sad looking 47305 (or 47395 as in this view) that arrived on the railway a few years ago. In its mainline career, it only carried this number for just over a year in 1994/5 when it was adapted with jumper connections to tow the brand new Class 92s from the Channel Tunnel through Kent to the 25kv overhead wired territory as they took some time to be certified to run using the third rail.

47205, running as 47395, 12.00 Pitsford & Brampton return, Pitsford & Brampton station
Bearing its authentic Railfreight Distribution (RfD) livery that it only wore for just over a year back in 1994-95 47205 now renumbered 47395 stands at Pitsford and Brampton station. This is the Northampton and Lamport Railway's only operation diesel at the moment with 31289 receiving some much-needed attention. As this Class 47 has no ETH equipment fitted the guard's van at the rear, that also acts as a DVT, has a generator hence the wisp of exhaust rising from it.

No. 764, stabled & 31289, undergoing restoration, Pitsford & Brampton sidings
Looking pretty miserable stabled in Pitsford and Brampton sidings to the north of the Pitsford station on the Northampton and Lamport Railway ara two locomotives, a restored wagon and a GUV. Leading the lineup is 0-4-0 Ruston & Hornsby 165DS class number 764. This is one of one hundred and twenty-four built with this one going to work for the Admiralty at RNAD Bedenham, Bridgemary, near Gosport. It worked at Bedneham shunting armaments around the site and was fitted with a (now removed) spark arrestor for obvious reasons! In 1975 it was sold and moved to Rail & Track Supplies at Wolverton who donated it to the fledgeling NLRbecoming its first locomotive in 1983. Tucked in behind 76 is resident 31289 undergoing some much-needed attention to ist incredibly rusty body.

Mince pie specials, tickets and goodies!
Our tickets for travel on one of the Northampton and Lamport Railway's Mince Pie Specials. As well as travel, there was live music in the coach with a mince pie and glass of sherry (or something else appropriate) for travellers.
