Yet another Ilford to Northampton drag of a former Greater Anglia Class 360 unit. The locomotives were also scheduled to return light engine to north London after dropping off the unit at the Kingsheath depot.

221143 & 221101, VT 13.14 Coventry-London Euston (1B24, 4E), Roade Hill In tricky lighting 221143 'Auguste Picard' and 221101 '101 Squadron' heads south between Roade and Ashton working Avanti West Coast's 13.14 Coventry to Euston 1B24 service. With engineering works closing the line at Birmingham International all Avanti and London NorthWestern West Midland services were terminating at and starting from Coventry with the dreaded 'bustitution' from there. 66305, 13.09 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L48, 10L), Roade Hill 66305 is not one of my most photographed DRS Class 66s and on this day it was making a very strange noise as it toiled past me between Roade and Ashton leading the daily 4L48 Daventry to Purfleet that, as is usual on a Sunday, terminates at Ripple Lane. As the locomotive passed me the driver gave me a cheery wave from the open cab window so he was obviously not too concerned about the odd-sounding engine and it arrived just ten minutes late - so it must be me! 47749, 360120 & 47727, 11.21 Ilford EMUD-Northampton EMD (5Q60, 1E), Victoria bridge 47749 'City of Truro' leads the 11.21 Ilford EMU depot to Northampton Kingsheath 5Q60 past Victoria bridge just south of Roade. The veteran Class 47 is towing former Greater Anglia 360120 to the Siemens' depot at Northampton for modifications to enable 110mph running and further use on the electrified MML route between St. Pancras and Corby. 47727 'Edinburgh Castle/Caisteal Shun Eideann' is on the rear of the train. 47727, 360120 & 47749, 11.21 Ilford EMUD-Northampton EMD (5Q60, 1E), Victoria bridge Notice that the front of the train in the distance is in full sun and the rear in the foreground is in the shade - such is the nature of railway photography! 47749 'Edinburgh Castle/Caisteal Shun Eideann' is seen dead in tow attached to the rear of 360120 passing Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton. 47727 'City of Truro' is towing the train that will soon arrive at its destination and deposit the Class 360 for modification work at Siemens' Kingsheath depot to enable 110mph operation. 47749 & 47727, 16.01 Northampton EMD-Ferme Park (0Z46, 7L), site of Roade station Having deposited a Class 360 at Northampton Kingsheath depot a little earlier 47749 'City of Truro' and 47727 'Edinburgh Castle/Caisteal Shun Eideann' return south as the 16.01 Northampton EMD to Ferme Park 0Z46 light engine move. The locomotives are seen passing the site of Roade's former station. Whilst the paint job and restoration of 47749 is impressive the front end is somewhat spoilt by the placing of the jumper cable sockets in the centre of the former headcode panel.
