To counteract the Christas excess I took a walk around Roade on a smashing winter's day.

Class 390, 11.33 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S63), site of Roade station
Thee 11.33 Euston to Glasgow Central Virgin service passes the new Roade volcano! The location is the site of the village's old station with the pile rubble being pulverised concrete and bricks from the former Pianoforte factory that used to occupy the land in the background.

390040, VT 10.10 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A20), site of Roade station
390040 'Virgin Pathfinder' emerges into the winter brightness at Roade with the driver no doubt squinting as a result of the sun's low angle. The Virgin Pendolino is working the 10.10 Liverpool Limes Street to Euston 1A20 service.

Class 390, VT 11.36 London Euston-Stafford (9S65), site of Roade station
This portrait view at Roade shows one of the village's two water towers silhouetted against the winter sky. The tower was constructed to provide header water pressure for the former Pianofirte factory that has just been demolished to the left in this photograph. The tower is now out of use awaiting a decision on its future. In the foreground, an unidentified Class 390 Pendolino heads north working the 11.36 Euston to Stafford.

350241, LM 11.13 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (Cancelled from Northampton) (1Y27), site of Roade station
London Midland's 350241 passes Roade working the 11.13 Euston to Birmingham New Street. Unfortunately, this service was cancelled from Northampton no doubt forcing passengers for the Midlands to change to an alternative northbound service that would be very crowded.

350104, LM 10.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U26), site of Roade station
350104 bursts into the winter sunshine at Roade forming the 10.02 Crewe to Euston London Midland service. It is not particularly common to have a 350/1 subset on these 'fast' services with the company preferring to use the 350/3 subset that is capable of a slightly higher maximum speed of one hundred and ten miles per hour.

350120, LM 11.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y34), site of Roade station
350120 passes the site of Roade's former station working the 11.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston service. Unfortunately, the building work in the background with the fenced-off land is not part of a grand reopening plan for the station but the first stages of the clearance of the former Pianoforte factory for yet more housing that makes the case for reopening an even more compelling proposition!

Class 350, unidentified down working, site of Roade station
An alternative viewpoint at the site of Roade's former station. Adopting a wide-angle reveals the footbridge that used to afford locals access to the station from both sides of the village that straddles the WCML. The huge mounds in the background ar all that remains of the former Pianoforte factory that has been demolished over the past year to make way for a vast new housing estate that will be built on the site. The unidentified Class 350 is about to pass under the bridge with an unidentified northbound London Midland service,

90024, 11.52 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly Footex (1Z90), Roade cutting
90024 leads a mixed bag of stock through Roade cutting. The locomotive is leading the 11.52 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly football special conveying Chelsea supporters for their premier league match with Manchester United. The match was a bit of a damp squib with a resultant and not unexpected 0-0 scoreline with United being the marginally better team of the two.

90029, 11.52 London Euston-Manchester Picadilly Footex (1Z90), Roade cutting
Looking smart, if a little grubby, in its DB livery, 90029 brings up the rear of the 11.52 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly footex special. These football specials were a common feature of the railways for many years but during the seventies, they gained a reputation for being a bit on the rough side with drunken hooligans wrecking trains hence why BR often wheeled out its oldest Mk. I stock! Today, whilst there are fewer football charters, they are a lot more civilised with fans enjoying a ride in some airconditioned Mk. IIf stock.

350373, LM 11.54 London Euston-Northampton (2N13), Roade cutting
350373 passes through Roade cutting working the 11.54 Euston to Northampton London Midland service. This particular unit is one member of a ten-strong subset numbered 350368 to 350377. They are built with one hundred and ten miles per hour operation and were introduced during 2014 for use on the longer distance journeys that use the fast lines particularly in the north-west.

92036, 11.47 Wembley-DIRFT (0B41), Roade cutting
92036 'Bertolt Brecht' leads the 0B41 11.47 Wembley to Daventry bottled water train through Roade cutting in the fading afternoon light. This train will have originated from Dollands Moor having come through the tunnel from France last night. This is an ageing two-tone Railfreight grey livery now being the one that the Class 92 will have left Brush at Loughborough in October 1995 and note that it is still wearing its BR raised arrow some eighteen years after the nationalised company ceased to exist!

350266, LM, 12.15 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y40) & 11.47 Wembley-DIRFT (0B41), Roade cutting
The diminutive size of London Midland's 350266 working the 12.15 Birmingham to Euston service is clear in the scene in Roade cutting. It is somewhat dwarfed not only by the size of the cutting but also by the cargo wagons carrying bottled water from Wembly to Daventry. The 0B41 is being hauled by 92036 'Bertolt Brecht' that is already well out of sight at the front of the train.
