Again leaving my wife and son, this time safe and warm watching Saturday night TV I took the tube back to King's Cross to see The Lindum Fayre charter arriving back at King's Cross led by Stanier 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland'.

Taken on the platform end at King's Cross passengers are seen walking towards a VTEC service that will soon leave for Newcastle. Meanwhile, a Great Northern Networker will soon leave with the 20.44 to Peterborough. To the far left DVT 82219 brings up the rear of the 20.49 empty coaching stock train to Bounds Green.

91126, GR 21.00 London King's Cross-Newcastle (1N34), London King's Cross station
The 1N34 21.00 departure to Newcastle still has over fifteen minutes before it is scheduled to depart but already two VTEC employees are in the cab preparing their paperwork; I wonder if one is undergoing some sort of driver training? 91126 will lead the train that should arrive at Newcastle half an hour or so after midnight.

The recently installed LED lighting at King's Cross provides lighting of a brilliant nature being neutral to the nighttime photographer who may be mad enough to be out on the platform end on a winter's Saturday night! 91129 sits idle at the country end of the station waiting to return to its Bounds Green depot at 20.49. There it will be serviced and cleaned ready for its next day in service on the ECML.

An alternative view of the first photograph in this section at https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29346714404/x82219-20-49-london-king-s-cross sees 365513 leaving King's Cross bang on time with the 20.44 Great Northern service to Peterborough. Next to the Networker, 91129 sits idle waiting to head back to Bounds Green empty as the 5Y46. I like the contrast in this photograph of the motion blur from the Great Northern train compared with the brilliant sharpness and light of the rest of the image aided by the modern LED lighting at the station.

180110, HT 18.36 Hull-London King's Cross (1A96) & 43423, GC 17.29 Sunderland-London King's Cross (1A69), London King's Cross station
Two open access operators' trains stand on the blocks at London King's Cross. To the left Hull Trains' 180110 has just arrived having worked the 1A96 18.36 from Hull with its passengers still making their way down the platform. To the right Grand Central's HST power car has led their 1A69 17.29 from Sunderland. In its original guise numbered 43123 this particular power car was entered service on the ECML in May 1979 as a 'spare' power car (along with 43122) both were never assigned to a particular numbered set like all of the others. It has spent its entire thirty-six years of service thrashing up and down the ECML ever since.

46233, return leg of The Lindum Fayre, 17.41 Lincoln-London King's Cross (1Z48), London King's Cross station
46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' rests on the blocks at London King's Cross as a member of the cab crew changes the headlight with a tail light. The 1938 built LMS Coronation Class has just brought the 1Z48 Lindum Fayre charter back from Lincoln where its passengers have enjoyed a pre-Christmas day out sampling the extensive seasonal market. The Railway Touring Company will be pleased that the day has gone without a hitch with both the outward and return workings running exactly to time with no hitches.

46233, return leg of The Lindum Fayre, 17.41 Lincoln-London King's Cross (1Z48), London King's Cross station
A relatively long exposure has been used at King's Cross to photograph 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' that produces some interesting effects as the steam escapes from the locomotive. The Coronation Class has just arrived with the return Lindum Fayre charter as 1Z48 from Lincoln. The train crew will be working hard now to clean and tidy the stock as it prepares to leave empty to WCR's Southall depot.

47854, 22.18 London KIng's Cross-Ferme Park ECS (5Z49), London King's Cross station
At the country end of King's Cross station, 47854 'Diamond Jubilee' idles waiting to lead the 22.18 empty coaching stock train to Ferme Park. There the WCR Class 47 will run round and lead the train across North London to Wembley and later Acton for access to WCR's Southall facility. Unfortunately, something went wrong later in the night with the train remaining at Ferme Park until morning moving later the next day.

43313, GR 22.13 London King's Cross-Bounds Green TMD ECS (5Y19), London King's Cross station
43313 waits at King's Cross having arrived from the north. As it's late on a Saturday evening rather than head straight back again with another VTEC service train will run as empty coaching stock for servicing at Bounds Green. Running as 5Y19 it will leave in about fifteen minutes. As 43113 this power car has always been in operation on the east coast being introduced as part of set 254029 in March 1979.
