Leaving my wife and son in 'slumberland' I took the tube across London from High Street Kensington to King's Cross and then a Northern service to Alexandra Palace. Rather than join the crowds observing the departure from King's Cross I fancied seeing 46233 running with a little more pace. On the way to Alexandra Palace, I hopped off at Hornsey as the ECS was undergoing a reversal move as I was passing.

313032, GN 08.11 London KIng's Cross-Welwyn Garden City (2V12), London KIng's Cross station
In the chilly half-light at London King's Cross Great Northern's 313032 waits at platform ten with the 08.11 to Welwyn Garden City. I had planned to take this train to Alexandra Palace but the journey was shortened as on approaching Hornsey the charter ECS was seen adjacent to the station.

91101 'Flying Scotsman' looks absolutely superb in its new VTEC livery striking quite a pose at it waits at King's Cross. With an HST arriving behind it, 91101 will soon leave with the 1D05 08.03 to Leeds.

91111, GR 09.00 London King's Cross-Newcastle (1S09), London King's Cross station
Having just seen one celebrity Class 91 at King's Cross photographed in the previous image another one is observed. Again sporting some superb vinyl graphics 91111 'For the Fallen' will lead the 09.00 to Newcastle. Being eight o'clock in the morning and only a couple of weeks or so before the shortest day it is only just about half-light.

46233, 00.05 Carnforth-London King's Cross ECS (5Z45), Hornsey station
Leaning over the fence at Hornsey station 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' is seen at the rear of the ECS that will form The Lundum Fayre charter from King's Cross a little later in the morning. The stock has travelled down overnight from Carnforth as the 5Z45 leaving 00.05 with 47854 'Diamond Jubilee' leading the train with 46233 being added to the train after being got ready at West Coast's Southall depot.

47854, 00.05 Carnforth-London King's Cross ECS (5Z45), Hornsey station
Having made its way gingerly down the relief line at Hornsey station the stock for The Lindum Fayre charter prepares to be led the short distance into King's Cross. The stock has travelled to London overnight as the 00.05 from Carnforth with 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' joining the train after running in light engine from West Coast's Southall facility.

46233 & 47854, 00.05 Carnforth-London King's Cross ECS (5Z45), Hornsey station
The final move of a number of complicated ones takes place at Hornsey station. The ECS that will form The Lindum Fayre charter makes its final journey to King's Cross. The driver of 4-6-2 Princess Coronation 46233 (ex LMS 6233) 'Duchess of Sutherland' looks on as the train makes its way slowly south with 47854 'Diamond Jubilee' leading at the front.

313057 leaves Alexandra Palace at the rear of the 08.26 King's Cross to Stevenage with 313059 out of sight on the front. I had just alighted from this train making the short trip from Hornesy.

180111, HT 08.58 Bounds Green TMD-London KIng's Cross ECS (5H01), Alexandra Palace station
Having undergone servicing at Bounds Green depot Hull Trains' 180111 departs empty as the 08.58 5H01 to KIng's Cross. These Adelante Class 180s have been a bit like the hot potatoes of the railway world. They have transferred from TOC to TOC with notorious reliability issues never really dealt with properly so once they have entered service, they are managed as best as possible to then be passed swiftly on to somebody else!

313035, GN 08.41 London King's Cross-Welwyn Garden City (2V14), Alexandra Palace station
313035 and another unit approach Alexandra Palace working the 08.41 King's Cross to Welwyn Garden City 2V14 service. These elderly units dating from 1976/7 are due to be replaced in the coming few years as new stock is introduced improving the lot of London travellers.

313039, GN 08.29 Welwyn Garden City-London King's Cross (2Y17), Alexandra Palace station
313039 arrives at Alexandra Palace station working the 08.29 Welwyn to King's Cross service. Now approaching their fifth decade of operation I well remember in 1977 when I travelled on one of these units from King's Cross to Finsbury Park in my quest to spot Deltics. I recall being very impressed with trains then in particular with their revolutionary sliding doors!

08571 & 82207, ECS shunting move, out and in to Bounds Green TMD, Alexandra Palace station
Bounds Green depot is just a short distance north of Alexandra Palace station with access to the facility via a single service road to the east of the station and the down slow. In this manoeuvring move resident shunter, 08571 brings 82207 and a set of Mk. IV stock out of the depot and then, as a short time later return it again. 08571 is owned and operated by Wabtec Rail Limited based at Doncaster and looks very smart in their all-black livery. It entered service in June 1959 as D3738 and spent all of its working life at various Scottish depots until coming south in more recent years.

317345, GN 08.56 London King's Cross-Hertford North (2B14), Alexandra Palace station
Great Northern's 317245 slows for its stop at Alexandra Palace station forming the 2B14 08.56 King's Cross to Hertford North. On leaving the station the unit will keep to the far left down line and then cross the ECML on a large flyover built to avoid conflicting moves that would slow rest of the lines on this intesivly used seaction of the network.

313026, GE 08.30 Stevenage-London King's Cross (2D17), Alexandra Palace station

321420 GE 07.55 Cambridge-London King's Cross (2C35), Alexandra Palace station
Now running for Great Northern, former Silverlink 321420 arrives at Alexandra Palace station. The unit is working the 07.55 Cambridge to King's Cross service. Thes units entered service in 1988 with the 3214XX subset all first being based at Bletchley for use on the WCML between Euston and Birmingham via Northampton. They moved away when the Class 350s arrived in the late 2000s. The 321s have the odd nickname of 'Dusty Bins' after the animated charterer in the game show 3-2-1!

321406, GR 09.05 London King's Cross-Cambridge (2C08), Alexandra Palace station
321406 approaches Alexandra Palace station working the Great Northern 09.05 King's Cross to Cambridge service. Since its opening in 1859 it has been known as Wood Green (1859-1864), Wood Green (Alexandra Park) (1864-1971), again Wood Green (1971-1982) and then Alexandra Palace (from 1982).

46233, outward leg of The Lindum Fayre, 09.08 London King's Cross-Lincoln (1Z46), Alexandra Palace station
Having left King's Cross some four miles south of this location on time 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' has been leading The Lindum Fayre charter on the fast line. However, as can be seen in this photograph control have lost their nerve and are moving it to the slow line here at Alexandra Palace. However, the cross over is a flying junction and the charter is still going at a fair rate of knots as it passes.

There is an audio recording of this event on my youtube channel, see....https://youtu.be/6UPgNRBff3g

313038 & 313032, GN 08.59 Welwyn Garden City-London King's Cross (2Y19), Alexandra Palace station
Having just witnessed 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' pass Alexandra Palace I had to head back to Central London hoping that my wife and son, who I left sleeping earlier on, were up and ready for the day! I took 313038 and 313032 back to King's Cross as the 2Y19 08.59 from Welwyn Garden City to then take the tube from there. A fellow enthusiast is seen on the platform who had also turned up for the steam charter who also joined this train.

21401, Upminster-Edgware Road District working, (South Kensington-Kensington High Street), South Kensington station
With the Circle and the Hammersmith & City lines closed for weekend engineering works, I had to take the Piccadilly line south-east from King's Cross/St. Pancras. I then changed at South Kensington for a District Line train back to High Street Kensington. South Ken. TfL station is partially open to the surface so photographs are possible. A recently introduced S7 train, set number 21401 arrives with an Upminster to Edgware Roade train that I took just two stops. Thes new S7 sets are a step change for TfL replacing the D78s on this line that I am sure that Londoners will appreciate.
