Another dull day but some more Class 37 action got me out morning and evening! Also, during the day, I managed, by the skin of my teeth, to capture one of the GA Class 720 mileage accumulation runs. There are a couple of audio recordings of the Class 37 on my YouTube site.

319218 & 319005, LN 07.45 London Euston-Northampton EMUD (5N10, 12E), Milton Malsor SP738560
Former Thameslink units 319218 and 319005 (plus an unidentified unit in the centre) work back empty from London to London Northwestern's Kingsheath depot as the 5N10 past Milton Malsor near Northampton. They will have worked up in the morning normally being packed with commuters. However, at the present time, despite the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions, the three-unit twelve-car train will have been virtually empty as very few people are returning to their previous commuting patterns. London Northwestern has still not branded the majority of these units that are only used at peak times as they will be disposed of soon.

37521, 43046 & 43055, 07.14 Crewe HS-Eastleigh Arlington (5Z36, 2L), Milton Malsor SP738560
D6817 (37521) makes a fine racket as it gets away from Northampton approaching Milton Malsor towing former East Midlands Railway's HST power cars 43046 and 43055 with Mk.III 10416 sandwiched in the middle. Whilst the Mk.III was simply acting as a barrier the power cars were being taken to Eastleigh's Arlington Fleet Services' facility for attention. The train, running as 5Z36, left Crewe at 07.14 receiving a lot of attention by enthusiasts en route with plenty of updates. One observer was one of my railway chums, Mike, who had gone to see the train pass through Northampton station.

43055 brings up the rear of the 5Z36 07.14 Crewe HS to Eastleigh Arlington as it passes Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. Mk.III 10416 is next in the consist followed by a second HST power car, 43046, with 37521 making all the noise up at the front! The former EMR power cars, having recently been retired and been replaced on a temporary basis by some former LNER sets, are going to Arlington's facility at Eastleigh for overhaul and repainting for use in the charter market.

57307, unidentified working (0Z99), Milton Malsor SP738556
I had spotted the 0Z99 working on OpenTrainTimes making its way down the slow on the WCML not knowing quite what it was until a fellow photographer informed me that it was a Class 57 Thunderbird move. However, when it reached Hanslope Junction it was held on a red and looked as if it was going to be put on the fast line thus making a photograph impossible as we were at Milton Malsor on the Northampton loop. Consequently, I set off back to the van to get on with my day. I just so happened to check my phone as I was nearly back and saw that it had reverted back to the slow and that it was just one signal away from where I was! I stopped in the middle of the field that I was crossing, set the camera up, and there it was. The photograph was probably a better one than would have been taken where I was a little earlier as it was a light engine. If anybody has any information as to what this working was please could you get in contact with me. In another guise back in 1980 I photographed this Class 57 as 47225, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29477846804/x47225-23-40-glasgow-plymouth-1v57

720537 & 720538, 12.38 Rugby-Wolverton centre sidings (5Q28, 7L), site of Roade station
Concurrently numbered 720537 and 720538 pass the site of Roade station with the early running 12.38 Rugby to Wolverton Works 5Q28 mileage accumulation run. I very nearly did not get this photograph and had it not been for my athletic prowess would have missed it! I was sitting at home having lunch, aware that this train was running and spotted that it had just left Northampton and was approaching Hunsbury tunnel. I grabbed the camera and ran to this spot switching the camera on and removing the lens cap as I approached the bridge for it to appear under the A508 bridge in the background. Without checking the settings, I pressed the shutter and managed this image!

720538 & 720537, 12.38 Rugby-Wolverton centre sidings (5Q28, 7L), site of Roade station
As is now the norm the Bombardier built Class 720s destined for use with Greater Anglia are massively delayed for a whole host of reasons. The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed things even further but the units are now on mileage accumulation runs prior to heading to Essex and the northeast London area. On the second day of these runs, 720538 and 720537 head past Roade as the 12.38 Derby to Wolverton Works 5Q28. This short trip is part of a much longer round trip that involves going to Crewe and further south towards London. I think that these units look smart but very similar to so many others that have entered service or are about to, making them a little anonymous.

325012 & 325001, 11.20 Crewe TMD-Willesden PRDC (5A91, 4L), site of Roade station
Hot on the heels of the Class 720 mileage accumulation run was the daily empty postal vans heading south to Willesden Royal Mail depot in preparation for the evening's down loaded mail trains. 325012 and 325001 pass the site of Roade station as the 5A91 11.20 Crewe TMD to Willesden. After the demise of the mobile sorting office mail trains in 2002, there is further talk of them returning again in an effort to get more lorries off the roads and to reduce CO2 emissions.

Well loaded with Tesco boxes, the 09.55 Tilbury to Daventry rail freight terminal 4M07 passes Roade bang on time. The daily DRS operated Freightliner train is being led by 66434.

60046, 11.33 Chaddesden sidings-Willesden DC sidings (0Z0060, 40E), site of Roade station
60046 'William Wilberforce' runs light engine past the site of Roade station as the 11.33 Chaddesden sidings (just north of Derby station) to Willesden sidings. Class 60s have never been particularly common on the southern WCML but there is regular movement of them now as DCR has a contract removing spoil from HS2 works in the London area.

37521, 15.55 Eastleigh Arlington-Crewe HS (5Z37, 33E), between Roade & Ashton
In abysmal lighting 37521, masquerading as D6817, passes between Ashton and Roade leading a very smartly repainted Mk.II 17056 in Statesman Rail's cream and brown livery. It was returning to Crewe from Eastleigh as 5Z37 after towing some HST power cars the other way earlier in the day, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29301192804/x37521-43046-43055-07-14-crewe-hs . On a dull and drizzly summer's evening the reproduction British Railways' green livery carried by the Class 37 blends very nicely with the background!
