With Greater Anglia still operating its locomotive-hauled services in lieu of poor unit availability whilst my wife and son undertook some retail therapy I undertook some Class 37 therapy! We all took the train from Sheringham to Norwich with me taking a run out to Great Yarmouth.

156416, LE 09.44 Sheringham-Norwich (2S09), Cromer station
The guard (or train manager in modern parlance!) supervises the reversal of direction of 156416 at Cromer station. Having travelled in from Sheringham on the 09.44 to Norwich we will soon leave whence the direction that we arrived before diverging to the south at Cromer Junction. I can't help but feel that the Greater Anglia paint scheme is a little plain looking almost as if it's an unbranded neutral livery?

37405, LE 12.36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P20), stabled, Norwich station
A proper train sits at Norwich station! DRS' 37405 heads a short rake of Mk. IIF stock that will work out to the coast in a short time. DRS has the contract with Greater Anglia to operate several daily services due to continued shortages of units for a variety of reasons. The operation of these locomotive-hauled services by vintage Class 37s in top and tail mode attracts in a number of enthusiasts that surely must improve off-peak ticket receipts!

37405, LE 12.36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P20), between Acle & Great Yarmouth
On a glorious autumn day, a spot of window leaning and a class 37 at full chat, what could be better? Taken from the leading droplight 37405 hauls the 12.36 Norwich to Great Yarmouth GA service across the Norfolk Broads between Acle and Great Yarmouth.

An audio recording of this train storming away from Brundall a little before this particular photograph was taken can be enjoyed at..... https://youtu.be/jTzQnf0ToxY ....turn it up nice and loud but check the neighbours aren't in!

Yarmouth Vauxhall signal box (GE, 1884)
The superb Yarmouth Vauxhall signal box is seen from the droplight as the 12.36 from Norwich arrives at the station. It is a magnificent Great Eastern structure dating from 1884 that has thankfully been largely spared the scourge of crass 'modernisation' in the form of an inappropriate style of UPVC windows, cladding and a tin roof! Unfortunately, the Type 4 box that boasts a sixty-three lever Saxby and Farmer frame is doomed with the heavily delayed resignalling of the Wherry lines about to render it redundant. I sincerely hope that that the bulldozer and wrecking ball will not simply wipe it away but that it is sensitively dismantled and rebuilt somewhere on a heritage line. Notice the starter bracket signal on the platform ends with its illuminated route describers silhouetted against the lovely autumn sky.

37425, LE 13.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P21), Great Yarmouth station
This is exactly why Greater Anglia have had to continue to hire in rakes of locomotive hauled stock, even during the autumn. A lot of passengers alight from the Mk. II stock with their bags many looking forward to a break in a guest house at Great Yarmouth. This is the rear of the terminated train with 37425 'Sir Robert McAlpine' that will soon work the 13.17 return working to Norwich.

37405, LE 13.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P21), Great Yarmouth station
Having brought me into Great Yarmouth leading the 12.36 from Norwich 37405 will now trail the 13.17 return working. I have lost count of the years that Greater Anglia has been hiring in locomotive-hauled sets due to shortages of units with every year we are told is to be the last! Either way, it's a great way to enjoy a bit of proper 'old skool' haulage!

37425, LE 13.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P21) & 90007, LE 14.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P43), approaching Norwich station
A view from the droplight at the rear of the 13.17 Great Yarmouth to Norwich as it arrives at its destination sees 90007 'Sir John Betjeman' at the head of the 14.00 to Liverpool Street. Up at the front of the 2P21 is 37425 'Sir Robert McAlpine' that has been enjoyed thrashing access the Norfolk Broads. Notice the young enthusiast further down the train, he had done the same out and back trip as me with his mum who rather than indulging in a spot of window leaning sat in a sumptuous Mk. II seat reading her book!

158785, EM 13.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R94), Norwich station
The passengers making their way along Norwich's platform 3b have just alighted from the loco. hauled 13.17 service from Great Yarmouth on the adjacent platform 2. Meanwhile, Express Sprinter 158785 waits to depart in about ten minutes time at 13.57 for Liverpool Lime Street. I would not wish on anybody the torturous experience of making the entire journey to Merseyside on a Sprinter, good trains as they are!

57002, stabled RHTT, Norwich station
In between duties, a railhead treatment train stands idle in Norwich's station yard with a characteristically dirty 57002 at the front. These trains see heavy use at this time of year and they always operate in top and tail mode so I suspect that it has been sidelined due to an issue with the trailing locomotive as it appears to be absent.

90007, LE 15.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P43), Norwich station
Standing in the warm autumn sunshine at Norwich station is 90007 'Sir John Betjeman'. It is being prepared to work the 15.00 service to London Liverpool Street that will depart in the next five minutes. Notice the huge dome appearing to emerge from the roof of 90007. This dome is the one that greets passengers on arrival at Norwich station that rises above the main concourse.

158785, EM 13.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R94), Norwich station
In superb lighting at Norwich, East Midlands Trains' Sprinter 158785 gets away bang on time with the 1R94 13.57 service to Liverpool Lime Street. I like the livery that EMT apply to their trains and think that it looks good in all lighting due in a large part to the huge swathe of white along the flanks.

158864, EM 08.52 Liverpool Lime Street-Norwich (1L07), Norwich station
Just a few minutes after 158785 left for Merseyside working the 1R94 158864 arrives at journey's end having crossed the country from west to east. This train left Liverpool at 08.52 taking just over five hours to complete its journey. Whilst I like the BR built Class 158s are they really up to the job of such long journies?

90034, LE 16.30 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P53) & 90011, LE 16.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P51), Norwich station
It's not even two hours since the previous picture was taken but what a change! High cloud has come in and the sun has all but gone; such is the fickle nature of the UK's weather! Waiting at Norwich station is a pair of Class 90s that will be heading for London's Liverpool Street within half an hour of each other. To the right, 90011 'East Anglian Daily Times Suffolk & Proud' will leave first with the 1P51 16.00 departure whilst 90034, hired in from Deutsche Bahn (DB), will lead the 1P53 16.30 train.

Nameplate, 90011, LE 16.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P51), Norwich station
A number of the Greater Anglia Class 90s are named carrying plates that reflect the part of the country through which they work. 90011's nmae, 'East Anglian Daily Times Suffolk & Proud', is quite a mouthful!

156402, LE 15.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2C23), Norwich station
Greater Anglia's 156402 arrives at Norwich with the 2C23 15.17 from Great Yarmouth. GA relies almost exclusively on units such as this for its local services and it is these that they want to dispose of having ordered a huge fleet of brand new stock that is presently in the early stages of development.

170270, LE 16.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S26), Norwich station
Wearing its old livery 170270 waits at Norwich's platform one. It will soon work the 16.45 service to Sheringham that my wife, son and I would take back to the coastal town. The Class 170s are infinitely better than the more usual Class 156s but they are still only two coaches long and get very overcrowded at times particularly with school children.

156402, LE 16.40 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P28), Norwich station
Having arrived at Norwich a short while earlier from Great Yarmouth 156402 now waits with its engines switched off and will soon work the 16.40 return working. Despite being in GA's plain livery it carries no branding that seems a little unusual?

37425, LE 15.48 Lowestoft-Norwich (2J83), Norwich station
A proper train arrives at Norwich station! 37425 'Sir Robert McAlpine' has just come to halt on platform two leading the 15.48 from Lowestoft. Being the first weekday after the clocks went back means by this time in the late afternoon it is getting pretty dark. Notice the neat reflection of the colour light on the face of the track of the centre siding.

37405 will work the 17.36 evening commuter service from Norwich to Great Yarmouth. Out of sight on the rear is 37425 'Sir Robert McAlpine'. The Mk. II stock brings a welcome boost to capacity for the travellers heading back to the coast as well as a considerable improvement in comfort!

My return tickets from Norwich to Great Yarmouth was £8.30. Proportionately a little more expensive maybe but great value when it is remembered that I enjoyed Class 37 haulage out and back; worth every penny!
