61. GC's 5Z90-01.06.20

With Grand Central shutting down its complete operation during the COVID pandemic and having a very doubtful future on the railways it has had to cancel its planned Blackpool to London services that were due to start this summer. With a set of former LNER stock and a smartly repainted Class 90 sitting in Wembley Yard since January awaiting testing and staff training runs (the unused twice daily slots have been in the working timetable since March) the time had come for everything to head north to await any developments. I hope that GC survives and that the new services are introduced bringing locomotive-hauled services back to the WCML for the first time since 2011.

66553, 12.16 Lawley Street-London Gateway (4L46, 3E), Roade cutting
After a superb May with record-breaking hours of sunshine, June has started with more cloud! 66553 leads the 12.16 Lawley Street to London Gateway Freightliner through Roade cutting. Rather than the more usual location slightly further south I have gone to the much quieter Thorpe Wood bridge that is much closer to 'The Birdcage' that spans the slow lines that can be seen in this photograph.

66434, 13.51 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L48, 1E), Roade cutting
66434 labours on the steady upgrade from Northampton as it enters Roade cutting leading the daily 4L48 13.51 Daventry to Purfleet Tesco logistics service. It is DRS operated services such as this that have kept us fed during the recent months bringing vast amounts of imported products that we are all used to seeing on the supermarket shelves.

90037 & 90026, 13.32 Wembley Inter City depot-Widnes Transport Technical Centre (5Z90, 4E), Roade cutting
It is always on the flip of a coin as to whether special workings that have sufficient speed capabilities will travel via the Northampton loop or via the mainline between Hanslope and Holmorton Junctions. Whilst they may be pathed on either of the routes, on the day control, at the flick of a few switches, will route them the other way so making the choice of a suitable photographic location a bit of a gamble! Roade cutting is a certain spot as both lines are side by side with the Northampton route curving away to the east being on the left in this photograph. Due to go via Northampton, the 5Z90 13.32 Wembley Yard to Widnes Technical Centre (Alstom's facility) is seen here on the fast about to head directly to Rugby making for a pretty poor photograph! This change of route will have disappointed many photographers out to catch this working in the Northampton area and judging by the forum comments there were a number of them! 90037 leads the short set of former LNER Mk.IV stock (12211, 12434, 12310, 11319 and 82201) with repainted 90026 on the rear.

Dead in tow the smartly repainted 90037 is at the rear of the 13.32 Wembley to Alstom (Widnes) 5Z90 special working. Along with a short set of former LNER liveried Mk.IVs (12211, 12434, 12310, 11319 and 82201) the convoy is seen taking the Weedon route towards Rugby through Roade cutting with 90037 providing the power at the front. The set of stock and the GC liveried and branded Class 90 were being taken to the Widnes facility for secure storage awaiting developments following Grand Central's complete shutdown during the pandemic period. It is not at all certain if it will commence operations again and, if it does, whether its plans to operate its new services, that this stock was to be utilised on, will come to fruition.

66548, 09.25 Southampton MCT-Garston (4M28, 36E), Roade cutting
The 09.25 Southampton to Garston 4M28 Freightliner passes through Roade cutting led by 66548. A hot day but somewhat spoilt by cloud that obliterated the sun just at the crucial moments as seen in this particular photograph!

66616, 13.17 Willesden-Tunstead (6H50, 2E), Roade cutting
The 6H50 is one of those workings that appears regularly in the WTT but rarely actually runs. However, the 13.16 Willesden to Tunstead did run on this day with 66616 leading the train. It passes through Roade cutting with a largely empty set of JYA wagons apart from four that were mysteriously fully loaded at the rear. This particular Freightliner 66/6 is far better suited to this sort of working with its lower gearing and consequentially greater torque (tractive effort in railway parlance) but reduced speed - sixty-five as opposed to seventy-five miles per hour compared to a standard Class 66. Last week, this locomotive was seconded to an intermodal service due to a failure and is the only time that I can recall seeing a 66/6 working such a train, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29056406204/x66616-12-16-lawley-street-london

66724, 10.36 Felixstowe North-Hams Hall (4M23, 6E), Roade cutting
66724 'Drax Power Station' leads the very heavily laden 4M23 through Roade cutting. Despite using a fairly long lens that compresses things a little, the train still disappears around the corner in the distance and there were still a fair number of wagons out of sight. I have seen and photographed 66724 a number of times but probably the most unusual was passing Salhouse on the Norwich to Sheringham branch, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/23911822404/x66724-13-34-north-walsham-harwich
