By chance, I spotted a post from Ben Goldsmith on UK Rail saying that a Dollands Yard to Kirkdale move involving a new Merseyrail unit had just passed Berkhampstead. This gave me enough time to get dressed and get out and see it passing me at Roade. Of course, just before it arrived the sun was obliterated by a lone cloud in an otherwise cloudless sky!

66768 & 777004, 02.44 Dollands Moor-Kirkdale Carriage sidings (6X29, 2L), between Roade & Ashton
66768 leads the 6X29 02.44 Dollands Moor to Kirkdale through the early morning Northamptonshire countryside just south of Roade. The GBRf Class 66 is leading three barrier wagons and then, just in shot, a new Merseyrail unit number 777004 that arrived on UK soil by travelling through the tunnel on its long journey from Switzerland. After standing in bright sunshine an errant cloud covered the sun just seconds before the train arrived taking the edge off the light.

777004, 02.44 Dollands Moor-Kirkdale Carriage sidings (6X29, 2L) between Roade & Ashton
With a livery that is certainly quite a contrast to the lush spring greenery, Merseyrail 777004 passes on the down slow line between Roade and Ashton in Northamptonshire. It is continuing its journey from the Stadler factory at Bussnang, located in the northeast of Switzerland, to its new base at Kirkdale in Liverpool. The units should have been entering service by now but their introduction has been blighted by delays and, consequently, the first passengers will not use them for some time yet. This photograph was published in Rail edition 906.
