After not running for most of the week, the 0Z25 Norwich Crown Point to Crewe Basford Hall was showing up on RTT as having departed for the second day on the trot. After yesterday's debacle, I studied its progress throughout the morning with greater care and left home in plenty of time in order to capture it passing through Roade. After several days of clear blue skies and bright conditions, there was a little more cloud today but it was still a very warm day for early May.

390005, VT 11.50 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S63, 1E), site of Roade station
With the fast lines still closed for extended maintenance work and taking advantage of the emergency COVID timetable, 390005 'City of Wolverhampton' is on the down slow about to fork off towards Northampton as it passes Roade. It is working the 11.50 Euston to Glasgow Central 1S63 Avanti West Coast service.

John Deere Gator, up fast line, site of Roade station
After finishing their shift clearing the overhanging vegetation in Roade cutting two workers head back along the up fast line at the site of Roade cutting with all their kit. They are using a John Deere crossover all-terrain utility vehicle adapted for rail use by Gator Harsco Track Technologies in Essex. These handy vehicles have a drawbar capacity that allows each Gator to pull either a pair of cable drum trailers, five personnel carriers (for up to thirty people), three loaded flat trolleys, five-sixty feet rails or a mix, up to its maximum load of five thousand six hundred kilograms. After unloading all their kit, a relief crew took over and headed back the other way for an afternoon shift in the cutting.

66194, 07.05 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 13L), site of Roade station
66194 brings the 07.05 Dollands Moor to Daventry past the site of Roade station. This train, full of bottled water imported through the tunnel, and its balancing empty return working are the most regular and dependable freight workings on this section of the WCML being a seven days per week operation and running at about the same times for a number of years.

90006, 90008, 90005 & 90007, 08.42 Norwich Crown Point-Crewe Basford Hall (0Z25, 5E), site of Roade station
Looking more like that they have just emerged from the works rather than going to a new operator ready for a repaint into their corporate colours, a quartet of former Greater Anglia Class 90s passes the site of Roade station as the 0Z25 08.42 Norwich Crown Point to Crewe Basford Hall working. 90006 'Roger Ford', 90008 'The East Anglian', 90005 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson' and 90007 'Sir John Betjeman' are heading to Freightliner's headquarters at Basford Hall to enter a new phase of their working life as freight locomotives - a process that is reported to be starting by July. One wonders if they will still be wearing their nameplates when they emerge in their new green livery?

66425, 09.55 Tilbury-DIRFT (4M07, 4L), site of Roade station
66425 is my most photographed members of the class and I have many local images of it undertaking various duties. Here it is seen passing the site of Roade station leading the 4M07 09.55 Tilbury to Daventry Rail Freight Terminal. Despite the sun, there was a lot more high cloud about today and it was very warm for early May making it feel distinctly humid. Indeed, not long after this photograph was taken, there was a hefty shower spoiling people's appropriately socially distanced VE street party celebrations.
