My wife, son and I took a return trip on the train to the historic town of Roskilde about thirty minutes from Copenhagen. The purpose of our visit was to go to the superb Viking ship museum located on Roskilde Fjord. We enjoyed return travel using our great value Copenhagen Card on a double decker train that afoorded great viwes as we travelled through the Danish countryside.

1509, 10.07 Østerport-Ringsted, Copenhagen Central station
Our train from Copenhagen to Roskilde waits to leave Central station hauled by Class ME 1509. My wife son and I enjoyed haulage behind this locomotive to Roskilde as the 10.07 Østerport to Ringsted. This locomotive was severely damaged in an accident at Kalundborg in June 2000 taking some time to be repaired and return to service.

Frontage, Roskilde station
The delightful frontage of Roskilde station is a very distinctive design. It is alleged that the Danish architect J.F. Meyer allegedly inspired by Villa Borghese in Rome. It is Danmark's oldest railway station completed and opened in 1874 and being listed in 1964. Notice the flee market taking place on the pavement leading to the station.

DVT, 13.58 Kalundborg-Østerport, Roskilde station
Our train back from Roskilde arrives at the busy station lead by a DVT or a steering wagon as they are referred to on Danish railways. We took the 13.58 Kalundborg to Østerport back to Copenhagen enjoying the space and comfort of the Bombardier built double-decker coaches.

Copenhagen Card tickets
I cannot emphasise what good value the Copenhagen Card is. It is purchased per head for the number of days of your stay in Copenhagen. It permits unlimited travel on all public transport not only in the city but the city-region too. In addition, it also awarded discount entry into a number of attractions such as the city zoo.
