A dreadful day on the railways that just goes to prove what a dangerous working environment it is despite the often much-maligned and seemingly over obsession with health and safety. A contractor working on the embankment repairs opposite across the field from our home was hit by a train while working trackside. With all four lines stopped for the bulk of the day the various services attended and spent the day on-site doing their necessary work with the up and down fast lines opening in the early afternoon. My thoughts are with all those involved. In these strange times, it only serves to remind us of the fragility of life.

66531, 12.57 Birch Coppice-Felixstowe North (4L57, 3E), site of Roade station
Due to the closure of the down and up slow lines at Roade because of the investigation following the tragedy of a track-worker being hit by a train, all freight was moved to the fast lines once they re-opened at about 14.00. 66531 leads the 4L57 12.57 Birch Coppice to Felixstowe Freightliner past the site of Roade station on my website's namesake, 'the up fast'!

66755, 14.58 King`s Norton OT-Horsham, terminated at Redhill (6Z66, 9E), site of Roade station
With their use over until the autumn, the RHT tanks and pumps are taken from their base at Kings Norton just south of Birmingham. Originally, the 14.58 Kings Norton to Horsham 6Z66 had a Class 66 at both ends, but 66759 was removed at Landore Street leaving 66755 'Tony Berkeley OBE RFG Chairman 1997-2018' to lead the train south. Plans changed again later as the train was terminated on arrival at Redhill. The unusual working is seen passing the site of Roade's former station on the up fast line.

66415, 07.50 Felixstowe North-Lawley Street (4M94, 224L), site of Roade station
The 07.50 Felixstowe to Lawley Street is just getting underway after sitting on the down slow line just in sight under the Ashton Road bridge in the distance. It was there for over two hours following the re-opening of the up and down fast lines (nearest the camera). The train was used to shield the view from passing trains of the recovery and investigations following the horrible death of a track worker hit by 2N30 earlier in the morning. 66415 'You Are Never Alone' gets the heavy train going to be followed by the handing back of the down slow to signalers. The up slow opened sometime later once 2N30 was moved away from the scene. This awful incident reminds us again how dangerous railways are. This appeared to be a well-managed worksite and I am sure that the protocols and safety cases were all followed and in place and yet, still a worker was tragically hit and killed by a train. My thoughts are with all those involved with this tragedy.

325001, 325013 & Clas 325, 16.21 Willesden PRDC-Sheildmuir (1S96, 3E), Roade Hyde Road bridge
Still feeling the effects of a prolonged closure of the up and down slow lines just south of Roade, the 1S96 16.21 Willesden to Shieldmuir Royal Mail train is on the down fast passing Roade's Hyde Road bridge. Today, the train is being worked by 325001 and 325013 but I was unable to identify the final unit of the consist.

66523, 14.03 Ditton-Felixstowe North (4L92, 2E), Roade Hyde Road bridge
'On the up fast' (so as to coin a phrase!) 66523 emerges from Roade cutting taken from the village's Hyde Road bridge leading the 14.03 4L92 Ditton to Felixstowe multimodal train. After a glorious early spring day, the sun had gone behind a veil of high cloud thus taking the edge off the lighting.

66701, 14.18 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L18, 8L), Roade Hyde Road bridge
Just four minutes behind the previous freight (4L92) the 4L18 14.18 Trafford Park to Felixstowe is led by GBRf's 66701. It is on the up fast following the prolonged closure of the up and down slow lines and is seen about to pass under Roade's Hyde Road bridge.
