16. The Yorkshireman-07.03.20

A Saturday morning drive to Wellingborough in my Combo van to witness 60009 'Union of South Africa' pass through on one of its final ever runs before coming out of service. With no prospect of it being restored again, it will probably become a static exhibit somewhere and deteriorate badly. At the current time, this leaves no streamlined A4 Pacifics in operation which seems a bit of a travesty given the class' historical importance.

222006, EM 07.35 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D09, 4L), Wellingborough Driver Way bridge
Taken from the lofty heights of the newly opened Driver Way bridge, Wellingborough station is seen in the later stages of its re-build as 222006 'The Carbon Cutter' passes working the 07.35 St. Pancras to Nottingham. Whilst this new view is a welcome addition, the arrival of the wiring being strung between the registration arms will interfere with the images coming between the train and the lens!

222019, EM 07.31 Derby-London St. Pancras (1C17, 1L), Wellingborough Driver Way bridge
222019 approaches Wellingborough station passing under Mill Road bridge working the 07.31 Derby to St. Pancras service. This totally new view is from the bottom of a bank to the northern side of the huge new Driver Way bridge that opened at the end of 2019. Whilst the view is a little limited at least it is sufficiently low to enable the trains to be seen below the height of the wiring.

43032, EM 07.45 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B18, RT), Wellingborough Driver Way bridge
Now some three months into their special dispensation one of East Midlands Railway's HSTs led by 43032 works the 07.45 Nottingham to St. Pancras service on the approach to Wellingborough station passing under Mill Road bridge. The intention was for some of the former LNER HSTs, those compliant with the passengers with restricted mobility legislation, to take over operations on the MML. However, as can be seen here, this has yet to happen.

222021, EM 07.47 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M05, 8L), Wellingborough Driver Way bridge
Having made its stop at Wellingborough 222021 gets underway with the 07.47 St. Pancras to Corby 'stopper' service. Just north of Wellingborough, the Meridian will cross at Harrowden Junction onto the down slow to continue to Kettering and then Corby diverging from the MML at Kettering North Junction. When the slow lines are fully re-opened here at Wellingborough these services will utilise them all the way to and from Bedford and using the old platform three (down trains) and the new platform four (up trains).

60009, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.36 Ealing Broadway-York (1Z35, 7E), Wellingborough Driver Way bridge
Leaving quite a trail of exhaust behind it, 60009 'Union of South Africa' takes 'The Yorkshireman' charter through Wellingborough station. The A4 had brought the train from Ealing Broadway and was heading for York arriving a little ahead of schedule with no repeat of its persistent hot box issue on one of the tender axles that has caused problems in recent months. Apart from one more railtour on 28.03.20 and a possible appearance at the Great Central Railway that will be it for John Cameron's fine locomotive with permanent retirement taking place from 22.04.20.
