A filthy and miserable late February morning got me out from home to see 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' pass. I thought twice about doing this but as there had been precious few of these excursions this winter I decided to make the extra effort!

66501, 03.52 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, RT) site of Roade station
Whilst the building of the vast new housing estate in my home village of Roade has not been welcomed by many and has ruined some key photographic spots, new ones, if temporary, have been opened up. This is the first time that I have been able to get below the footbridge that spans the line at the site of Roade's former station. Here, 66501 'Japan 2001' passes leading the 03.52 Garston to London Gateway Freightliner service. As usual, notice the general detritus left behind by contractors including plant machinery, bags of unused ballast, drainage pipes and, rather randomly, a wheelie bin!

3901XX, VT 07.23 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G05, 4L), site of Roade station
An unidentified Class 390 Pendolino heads north past the site of Roade station forming the 07.23 Euston to Birmingham New Street. This is a new photographic location that has been opened up following the construction of a housing estate on the site of the former Pianforte factory site. The sidings that served the factory, particularly during World War II, were situated on the bare and open ground to the centre and left of this image.

390008, VT 07.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S42, 10L), site of Roade station
Unfortunately, when the Pendolinos were stripped of their Virgin identity following the end of their franchise during December 2019, 390008 'Charles Rennie Mackintosh' lost its unique handlebar moustaches on each nose cone. This vinyl always made this particular set easy to identify and was comedically typical of the approach that Virgin took towards their trains. It is seen passing the site of Roade station working the 1S42 07.30 Euston to Glasgow Central from a recently opened up spot that will be unusable soon when contractors finish work on the nearby housing estate.

86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 07.10 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86, RT), site of Roade station
I have seen very little of 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' this winter season on the 'Cumbrian Coast and Cumbrian Mountain Express' as it has not been running anywhere as frequently as it has in previous years. Running with the customary 1Z86 reporting number and leaving Euston at 07.10 for Carlisle with a change to steam at Carnforth it is seen passing the site of Roade station on this grey and dour February leap day morning.

390045, VT 07.05 Wolverhampton-London Euston (1B05, 8L), Ashton Road bridge
390045 passes Ashton Road bridge just south of the village of Roade in Northamptonshire working the Avanti West Coast 07.05 Wolverhampton to Euston service. Whilst the Pendolino is partially obscured by the wiring, I am taking full advantage of this totally new view following recent clearance of the embankment in order to undertake stabilisation work.

350232, LN 07.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U25, 4L), Ashton Road bridge
With the embankment rather brutally stripped of all vegetation following recent clearance by Network Rail's contractors 350232 is clearly seen working the 07.46 Euston to Crewe on the down fast line. This spot is just south of Roade and the purpose of the clearance is to undertake embankment repairs and stabilisation.
