With the days just beginning to lengthen ever so slightly, there was just enough light to capture the weekly new measurement train passing Roade on the WCML.

350122, LN 16.05 Northampton-London Euston (2N90, 5L), Roade cutting
With the sun having all but disappeared and just managing to illuminate the trees at the top of Roade cutting, 350122 heads south with the 16.05 Northampton to Euston.

43013 & 43014, NR 14.24 Derby RTC-Derby RTC (1Q28, 36E), Roade cutting
At 16.32 during the last week of January every minute meant it was getting significantly darker! I was thwarted a little by a delayed London Northwestern service that control let out in front of the NMT at Northampton. This meant that the light in the cutting was absolutely dire so I had to ramp the camera's ISO up to 20000. I had to do a fair amount of Photoshop processing in order to get a half-decent image of the New Measurement Train working its weekly 1Q28 14.24 Derby RTC return working that heads to Euston then back again to Derby via Crewe. It is interesting that this is one of the few trains that traverse the short section of line from Wichnor Junction to Lichfield Trent Valley low level utilising the short single track chord from Lichfield Trent Valley Junction. The NMT is being worked by 43013 'The Railway Observer' and 43014 'Mark Carne CBE' two power cars that have been a pair since their introduction in 1976 as set 253007 that I photographed back in 1980, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29751821804/x253007-14-25-london-paddington-penzance Notice the large ultraviolet camera on the roof of the third coach that was imaging the registration arm of every catenary mast with a burst of purple light every time it passed under one, illuminating the cutting in a vaguely psychedelic way!
