A short break in London with my wife and son. It was for no other reason than for them to visit the Westfield shopping centre at Shepherds Bush. I decided not to join them taking a trip to Paddington and King's Cross both now weirdly devoid of HSTs! The other strange thing at Paddington that I noticed was how quiet it was. I don't mean in terms of passengers travelling, there were plenty of them, but in terms of ambient noise. With the complete absence of diesel engines, it was a very different place to the Paddington I grew up with!

The journey down to London. This time we went from Milton Keynes with Avanti West Coast. London NorthWestern fares from Northampton seemed ridiculously high for our trip with the Avanti fare being less than half. |

After accompanying my wife and son to Shepherds Bush I took the tube to Paddington to experience its new quiet ambience with 800s gliding silently in and out of the station and also for a quick look at CrossRails new Class 345 'purple' trains now operating out to Reading and back. I then took a long walk from Baker Street to King's Cross due to planned closure of the Circle, Bakerloo and Hammersmith & City lines. I found King's Cross still busy with Class 91s and Mk. IV stock but devoid of all HSTs, the first time it has been like that since 1977. |
