66724, 11.33 Bletchley Cemex-Peak Forest (6H04), Roade cutting
A short distance into its journey, the 11.33 Bletchley to Peak Forest empty stone train is seen passing through Roade cutting. The train is being led by 66724 'Drax Power Station' a name that it took when it was a year old in September 2007. Despite the dull weather, this was a whole lot better than it had been earlier in the day with heavy rain and strong wind.

350262 & 350112, LN 11.55 London Euston-Northampton (2Z27, 7E), Roade cutting
I think that the livery applied to some of the class 350s, as seen here in Roade cutting, looks ridiculous! The silly yellow square and dark green paintwork is reminiscent of the British Railways green livery applied to much of its diesel fleet in the early 1960s, it didn't look good then and it's the same now! 350262 and 350112 form the 11.55 London Euston to Northampton, an unusual service with the headcode 2Z27. On studying Realtime Trains it was clear that a London Northwestern temporary timetable was in place with all trains going as far as Northampton and then heading back south from there. Trains were re-timed and most assigned with 2ZXX headcodes. On logging on to their website they stated that 'due to a temporary shortage of traincrew over half term (including those volunteering for overtime), we will be running an amended timetable south of Rugby on Saturday.' This ended a disastrous week for the company with delays every day causing hours of disruption for its passengers, see.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-50262788

350240 & 350377, LN 13.25 Northampton-London Euston (2Z36, 6E), Roade cutting
350240 and 350377 heads south through Roade cutting forming the 13.25 Northampton to London Euston service. This was a service that was running as 2Z36, as part of London Northwestern's emergency timetable to cope with acute staff shortages. It was interesting to note that virtually all of the services arrived a little early, in the case of this one, six minutes up. Was this a cynical ploy by the company, after a disastrous week, to re-time their services with generous recovery and slack times in order to avoid further complaints and delay repay claims; I'll let you decide?

Class 221, VT 12.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B21, 12L), Roade cutting
An unidentified class 221 Voyager passes through the northern end of Roade cutting forming the 1B21 12.50 Birmingham New Street to Euston. In this view of the cutting, taken from the isolated Thorpe Wood bridge, the colloquially named 'birdcage' is seen spanning the up and down slow lines. This was installed to strengthen the retaining walls after the 1890 collapse. In the early 1960s the steel framework was raised to accommodate the 25kv wiring.

350253 & 350117, LN 12.25 London Euston-Northampton (2Z25, 4E), Roade cutting
A wide-angled view of Roade cutting looking south taken from Accommodation or Thorpe Wood bridge (whichever name you choose!). 350253 and 350117 are seen working the 12.25 Euston to Northampton 2Z25 service. This was just one of the services running as part of London Northwestern's emergency timetable hastily put together due to severe staff shortages, a day that finished off a disastrous week for the operator, see.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-50262788

Class 221, VT 12.35 Chester-London Euston (1A35, 7L), Roade cutting
An unidentified class 221 is somewhat dwarfed by the magnificence of Roade cutting as it heads south forming the 12.35 Euston to Chester service. Soon the familiar Virgin livery will become a thing of the past as the new operator takes over the WCML services from the start of next month.

66419, 09.46 Felixstowe North-Crewe Basford Hall (4M87), Roade cutting
Looking smart in its Freightliner Genesee and Wyoming livery 66419 leads the 4M87 09.46 Felixstowe to Crewe through Roade cutting. At this point in the cutting, the train is just dropping away and below from the fast lines as it is about to curve off to its right to take the Northampton route to re-join the fast lines again at Hilmorton Junction just south of Rugby.
