After such a promising start to the day, by the time my wife and I came to head for Birmingham, it had clouded up. As usual, we travelled from Northampton courtesy of London MIldland.

Demolition of old Northampton station
The 'new' Northampton station opened last month and following this event, the demolition of the old station continues apace. In this view, looking through what was the old main entrance, the wholly inadequate concourse is seen. The red sign of the former shop is still in place facing the location of the ticket offices.

Demolition of old Northampton station
The demolition team have been working well removing the old Northampton station. This part of the old station will soon be gone to be replaced by a taxi rank and turning circle at the front of the new station.

Gate line, demolition of old Northampton station
The former gate line is seen at the old Northampton station during its demolition. Hundreds of thousands of people will have passed through these over the years that were installed. This view shows clearly the inadequacy of the old station in more recent years, four gate lines were simply not enough for a London commuter station!

350127 is seen in this image at the rear of the 10.38 Birmingham New Street to Euston at Northampton station. The new building, that opened last month (February 2015) is seen above the front of the train.

The crew of the 10.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street have a chat during its dwell time at Northampton. My wife and I took this service, formed by 350124 from Northampton to Birmingham.

170508, LM 16.05 Birmingham New Street-Shrewsbury (1J22), Birmingham New Street station
Birmingham New Street's odd bay platform four is useful for trains leaving from or terminating at the station from the west. Here, 170508 is boarding in preparation to work the 16.05 to Shrewsbury, no doubt taking many shoppers home after some heavy retail therapy in the city centre!

43321, XC 13.24 Exeter St. David s-Glasgow Central (1S51), Birmingham New Street station
43321 brings up the rear of the 13.24 Exeter St. David's to Glasgow Central as it leaves Birmingham New Street. A High-Speed Train has to be a far better way to make this journey, that goes via Derby, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, rather than the more direct WCML route than travelling in one of CrossCountry's dreadful Voyagers!

220029, XC 14.27 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournemouth (1O22), Birmingham New Street station
220029 pokes its nose out of the gloom of Birmingham New Street station forming the 14.27 Manchester Piccadilly to Bournemouth service. As a class 220 this is one of the non-tilting versions. In a previous life, when in use with Virgin, it carried the name 'Cornish Voyager'.

A scene that typifies Birmingham New Street as 220029 leaves the station heading into one its many tunnels. The Voyager is working the CrossCountry 14.27 Manchester Piccadilly to Bournemouth service.

390130, VT 15.43 London Euston-Edinburgh (9S80), Birmingham New Street station
390130 'City of Edinburgh' arrives at Birmingham New Street with the 15.43 Euston to Edinburgh. Going via Birmingham with several intermediate stops, rather than the Trent Valley route means that this service takes a fair bit longer to reach Scotland.

221102, VT unidentified up working, Birmingham New Street station
I never did discover what this Virgin Voyager was working. It was locked and out of use with the display saying, rather unhelpfully, 'Arrived Station'. 221102 'John Cabot' stands inside New Street with much evidence to the left of the train of the extensive re-build that the station was undergoing.

Tickets, Northampton-Birmingham New Street
Our outward tickets from Northampton to Birmingham New Street. Unusually, the cheapest option this time was as an off-peak return, more often than not, this is not the case.
