For our journey home we flew by Aeroflot from Moscow Sheremetevo airport back to Heathrow. In order to get to the airport, we took the excellent Aeroexpress service from Belorussky station. Approaching Heathrow necessitated a flight in over Essex and then Central London affording some superb views from the 'plane as the weather was clear.

ED4MKM-AERO-0005, 10.00 Moscow Belorussky-Sheremetevo airport (10.00 Moscow Belorussky-Sheremetevo airport), Moscow Belorussky station
As well as being one of Moscow's terminus stations, Belorussky station also has a number of busy through platforms. This one, platform two serves Sheremetevo airport via a thirty-minute shuttle service that leaves on the hour and half hour. The trains are a little slow, despite having no scheduled intermediate stops, and thus can't really live up to their Aeroexpress name. The services are worked exclusively by the ED4MKM-AERO subset of which there are seven. This family of EMU, that is found all over the RZD network, are built by DMZ at their factory close to Moscow. We travelled on ED4MKM-AERO-0005 to Sheremetevo airport finding the train comfortable and well designed for luggage storage. It was also excellent value for money costing just £13 for the three of us.

Burnham-on-Crouch, from flight SU2582
Our flight back from Moscow to Heathrow brought us in over the Essex coast as we descended in preparation for landing. In this view, looking south from Aeroflot flight SU2582, the town of Burham-on-Crouch is seen in the afternoon sunshine. The branch line to Southminster can be seen curving from mid-right to lower-left. In the lower right-hand corner, the line of trees weaving through the harvested wheat fields marks the route of Mangapps Farm railway, see.... http://www.mangapps.co.uk/index.html

Bounds Green depot, from flight SU2582
As our Aeroflot flight descended for its approach to Heathrow, after flying in westwards over south Essex and north London, it turned one hundred and eighty degrees and headed east again. It is just about to complete its turn in this photograph and below is Bounds Green depot and the ECML. Close examination reveals lines of Virgin Mk. IV sets outside of the depot. The line heading off to the northeast is Hertford loop with the ECML largely out of sight in the Wood Green tunnels under the trees to the left.

Wimbledon depot, from flight SU2582
Having completed one one hundred and eighty degrees turn Aeroflot flight SU2582 then completed another sharp turn over south London to line up for its final descent into Heathrow. In this view, the large Wimbledon depot is seen in the centre of the image. To the bottom of the image is Earlsfield station with the line to Putney going off to the right past Wimbledon Park lake. Towards the top of the image, Wimbledon station can be clearly seen with a southbound train about to arrive at the station.

Ticket, Moscow Belorussky-Sheremetevo airport
Unlike trains from Heathrow or Gatwick to London, the fares to and from Moscow airports to the city are cheap and easy to understand making for a pleasant welcome for visitors. The fare structure is simple, a one-way fare was RUR400 (about £5.30) for up to two people, then, for up to four people it was RUR950 (£12.60). The savings then become even more for larger groups. Great value for the thirty-minute journey on dedicated trains from a centrally located station into the terminal building; we have so much to learn!
