To mark the start of the 2019/20 football season Liverpool played Manchester City at Wembley in the curtain-raising Community Sheild. A footex was charted from Merseyside for the Liverpool supporters and I made the effort to get out locally and see it twice on the out and return working. Unfortunately, for the Liverpool fans, their journey home would have been a little quiet as they lost 5-4 on penalties.

Due to engineering works on the Weedon loop of the southern WCML, all traffic was being diverted via Northampton. 390107 has just crossed the M1 motorway and is approaching Milton Malsor working the 08.38 Liverpool Lime Street to Euston.

390156 'Stockport 170' is seen passing Milton Malsor on the approach to Northampton with the 10.16 Euston to Liverpool 1F12 service. It is taking the slower route rather than the mainline due to an engineering possession. This Pendolino was the first eleven-car set to be introduced to service during February 2012

DR73947, 11.15 Hanslope Junction-Rugby Depot (via reversal at MKC) , Milton Malsor SP738560
Having completed some engineering work over the previous night, track machine DR73947 heads back to Rugby as the 11.15 ex Hanslope Junction via a reversal at Milton Keynes. The Colas Rail operated machine is seen passing Milton Malsor on the approach to Northampton.

390117 'Blue Peter' forms the 10.05 Wolverhampton to Euston approaching Milton Malsor on the Northampton loop off the WCML. It will rejoin the route it would normally have taken in Roade cutting, about three miles away. Notice that the embankment is re-growing at an alarming rate having been completely cleared last winter. I suspect that by this time next year, this picture will have become almost impossible again.

DB's 90019 'Multimodal' leads the 09.18 Liverpool South Parkway to Wembley Central football charter past Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. Inside the Mk. IIF stock, leased from Riviera Trains, are Liverpool fans travelling down to Wembley for their teams Community Sheild season opener with Manchester City, who did not charter a train for their fans! At the rear of the train is 67029 ' Royal Diamond'.

In the poor evening light, 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' races past Milton Crossing just to the north of Roade Cutting working the 19.05 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street.

The sky to the north at Milton Crossing, between Roade and Blisworth, is looking a little brighter as 390047 passes working the 18.03 Crewe to London Euston. This particular Pendolino was the one selected and used for the September 2007 Glasgow to Euston record attempt.

There is no mistaking the approach of a class 221! The row from their Cummins QSK19 diesel engines, one per carriage, each producing 750hp is distinctive and far from subtle! 221113 is working the 19.08 Euston to Holyhead and is seen passing Milton Crossing just north of Roade cutting that is just around the curve in the background.

90019 'Intermodal' leads the return 19.16 Wembley Central to Liverpool South Parkway footex past Milton Malsor. The train was full of disappointed Liverpool supporters who had witnessed their team beaten 5-4 on penalties by Manchester City at Wembley. In doing this, they had lost the season-opening Community Sheild, where the winners of the previous season's league play the winners of the FA Cup. As Manchester City won both, then the runners up in the league play the FA Cup champions.

67029 'Royal Diamond' brings up the rear of the 19.16 Wembley Central to Liverpool South Parkway footex carrying disappointed Liverpool supporters home after their team lost the Community Sheild to Manchester City 5-4 on penalties. The electric at the front, 90019 'Intermodal' lead the outward and return working so both locomotives will have run round when the train was laid-up in Wembley yard. It would have made sense to have an electric at both ends to avoid this rather unnecessary move but I suspect that on arrival at Liverpool South Parkway that the electric would have been detached and 67029 would have taken the train back to its base at Burton-on-Trent where there are no wires.
